About the role
In this role you will provide expert technical advice and input into heritage assessments and heritage amendment processes and coordinate built heritage referrals by working closely with internal and external stakeholders to achieve great outcomes. This team collaborates with property owners, heritage consultants and the community to safeguard significant places, and lead research that captures and promotes Geelong’s rich built and intangible heritage.
Work type: Fixed term contract until 30 June 2027, 3 days a week.
Classification: Band 6, $95,760 + super, pro rata.
Key responsibilities include:
- Apply best-practice heritage principles in the preparataion of heritage assessments and statements of significance to deliver strong project outcomes and advice.
- Liaise with external agencies, including Heritage Victoria, to ensure coordinated, well-informed heritage decisions.
- Prepare high-quality briefs, reports and guidance materials for Built Heritage projects.
- Drive continuous improvement across heritage project delivery, referral processes and professional practice.
- Coordinate heritage study timelines and ensure reporting and amendment requirements are met.
- Brief Strategic Implementation on heritage projects, provide expert advice, and support the timely preparation of Statements of Significance.
- Maintain an internal and external referral register, tracking requests, advice and outcomes.
- Manage and prioritise heritage referrals with the Built Heritage Coordinator, aligning with statutory timeframes and organisational priorities.
- Identify and implement improvements to built heritage processes and systems.
- Oversee the development of clear, user-friendly fact sheets, tools and digital content to support community understanding of built heritage.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have a tertiary qualification in heritage, architecture, heritage conservation, planning or related field and significant professional experience in built heritage in a comparable organisation.
Essential Experience:
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and policies including the Planning and Environment Act 1987, Heritage Act 2017, Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, and Greater Geelong Planning Scheme.
- Sound knowledge of built heritage conservation principles, including heritage significance, statements of significance, heritage criteria and recognized conservation methodologies.
- Understanding of the Victorian planning system as it relates to heritage, including heritage overlays, strategic planning processes and the role of referral advice.
- Understanding of State heritage processes and the role of Heritage Victoria and other government agencies.
- Familiarity with heritage studies, strategies and implementation frameworks within a local government setting.
- Experience establishing, maintaining and using internal and external referral registers to track requests, advice, timelines and outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience using web-based systems to manage referrals, and ability to prepare, manage and update content across online systems, templates and guidance material.
Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
