About the role
Working closely with the Lead Legal Counsel, Projects & Infrastructure and the Chief Legal Officer, this role calls for a dynamic, strategic, and innovative professional who collaborates across Council, applying a multidisciplinary approach to navigate complex issues and deliver practical, high-quality solutions.
Work type: Permanent, full-time.
Classification: Band 8, $122,040 plus super.
Key responsibilities include:
- Deliver high-quality legal advice, services, and practical solutions to internal stakeholders, aligned with the Department Business Plan, legislative requirements, and the City’s strategic interests, particularly across projects, infrastructure, and construction.
- Confidently research, analyse, and provide expert advice across key areas of practice, including complex and emerging legal issues, using innovative and creative approaches to achieve impactful outcomes.
- Build and maintain strong, strategic relationships with key stakeholders to support the achievement of the City’s objectives.
- Engage and manage external legal advisors, including specialist firms and Counsel, overseeing performance, coordination, and legal budgets.
- Negotiate effectively and influence positive outcomes across a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Anticipate client needs and provide clear, persuasive advice to navigate competing priorities and resolve complex or conflicting issues.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have a tertiary qualification in law and admitted to practice law in the state of Victoria and hold a current practicing certificate.
Essential Experience:
- Have at least 2 years post-admission experience.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and practices related to public sector legal practice.
- Demonstrated people skills to support, influence, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders.
- Well-developed writing, presentation, and speaking skills to align with stakeholders and achieve support for task outcomes.
- Strong problem solving and stakeholder management skills with the ability to build collaboration and partnerships.
Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police and Working with Children’s Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
