About the Engineering Services Department
This department is part of our City Services Division, and is responsible for the effective and sustainable management of Council’s infrastructural  assets, including the planning, design, and delivery of a number of asset-related services.

About the Role
The Civil Inspector maintains and promotes quality control of road, drainage and concrete construction carried out by Contractors and ensures all works are in accordance with approved plans, specifications, standards and contract conditions.

The Civil Inspector is responsible for the completion of all necessary program administrative requirements including ensuring adherence to Council OH&S requirements, completing purchase orders and monitoring costs through program spreadsheets.

The position is also responsible for the delivery of additional works and assist contractors where problems arise to solve those problems without compromising cost, quality or safety outcomes.

This is a temporary full-time 6 month position.

Some of the key responsibilities in this role will include:

  1. Supervising the work of contractors to ensure compliance with Council standards, specifications, approved construction plans, contract documentation and that all works meet contract conditions in terms of quality and time-lines.
  2. Monitoring construction techniques to ensure they are safe and in accordance with relevant Council procedures, submitted Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) and all State and Federal Government legislation and standards.
  3. Advising the Principal Delivery Engineer of any decisions made associated with any construction aspect, potential public liability claim or conflict with the public to obtain follow up direction, guidance or approval of actions.
  4. Liaising with contractor/Principal Delivery Engineer to ensure works are completed to Council standards.
  5. Providing updates on progress of programs to the Principal Delivery Engineer as required.
  6. Ensuring that contractor complies with submitted SWMS.
  7. Closely monitoring progress of works to ensure accurate quantities are used in determining contractor payments.
  8. Assisting Principal Delivery Engineer in assessing construction plans prior to project delivery.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Several years’ experience in civil construction works including road pavements and surfaces, concrete works (kerb and channel and footpaths) and drainage construction with some supervisory experience in the civil construction industry.
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence.
  • Construction Induction White Card/Red Card
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety issues in regard to construction works.
  • An understanding of basic worksite traffic management.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with difficult contractors and customers.
