About the role
In this hands on role you will be working within the City’s Environmental Health team. You will be responsible for providing specialist advice to the community and administering a regulatory Environmental Health Service, ensuring compliance with legislation, policy and best practice to help protect public health.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Processing applications and approvals for premises registered with Council pursuant to relevant legislation.
  • Conducting inspections, assessments and other surveillance activities including sampling to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Maintaining accurate and factual file notes, records and other documentation for all inspections and investigations conducted.
  • Undertaking appropriate enforcement action when non compliances are identified.
  • Establish positive communications with the general public to educate, promote and assist with the need for compliance with the various statutes, legislation and local laws.
  • Investigating and following-up infectious disease notifications including outbreaks and provide advice and information on infections disease control to the public as required.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced Environmental Health professional, with current knowledge of Environmental Health legislation and the ability to interpret this legislation. You will need to be able to engage with and build relationships with a diverse range of people and be confident in your ability to have difficult conversations.

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of environmental health in order to identify, analyse and deliver options for policy development and problem solving.
  • Some experience in legal proceedings, with the ability to prepare competent prosecution reports.
  • Ability to interpret, apply and clearly explain decisions in plain English, to the public and business owners.
  • Ability to work autonomously (making appropriate decisions within legislative powers of an authorised officer while achieving department goals).
  • Qualification as an Environmental Health Officer and eligibility for membership to Environmental Health Australia (EHA) or Environmental Health Professional’s Association (EHPA).
