Job Summary: Performs public service at the Reference Desk. Supports Reference Librarians with library collection maintenance and projects. Maintains and provides supplies for the Reference Desk and department. Coordinates Reference Desk schedule. Manages and supervises student assistants.

Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma and two years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Position Qualifications: Knowledge of basic library resources, procedures, and policies. Ability to provide excellent customer service to a variety of patrons. Ability to work well as a team member, showing initiative and motivation to assist others. Dedication to public service, patron-centered attitude, and friendly and approachable demeanor. Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision, yet recognize when to seek guidance. Flexibility and ability to manage and meet deadlines. Ability to establish work priorities efficiently. Effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office products; Experience with OPACs; Experience with a Library Management System.
Essential Functions / Job Duties:
  • 40% - Supports the Reference Department by assisting with collection maintenance and analysis, assisting with creating and editing tutorials, research guides, and other instructional and outreach materials. Supports Reference staff and fills in at Information Desk during staff absences and in instances of increased workload. Assists Interlibrary Loan Coordinator by analyzing ILL data and other projects as needed. Assists Collection Development Coordinator with book orders by verifying titles and compiling publication information. Assist Scholarly Communications Coordinator with scholarly communications activities as needed. Assist Data Analysis Coordinator with projects to collect and analyze usage stats in support of collection development. Assists Information Literacy Coordinator with related projects as needed. Prepares labels, signage, and other aids to using library resources. - (Essential)
  • 45% - Delivers high-quality public service at the Reference Desk 16-20 hours a week by providing directional type responses to library users, referring library users to appropriate services, interpreting general library policies to library users, and providing instructions in the use of appropriate search strategies of the library catalog, databases, and other resources. Assists library users with printing and scanning inquiries. Coordinates the Reference Desk schedule and statistics. Coordinates reference training sessions. Updates and maintains Reference manual. Maintains and provides supplies for the Reference Desk and department. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Interviews, hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises student assistants for the Reference Desk and coordinates cross-training of students from other library departments on Reference Desk policies and procedures. Collects and verifies timesheets for student personnel in Reference and monitors OPS hours. Supervises Reference collection maintenance processes by assigning daily tasks to student assistants and verifying that all tasks are accomplished correctly and efficiently. Assists Marketing and Communication Librarian as event volunteer, as needed. Serves as a member of library or university committees as assigned or elected. - (Essential)
