PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Simulation & Laboratory Faculty aids the Associate Director Simulation & Laboratory, the Simulation & Laboratory Lead faculty, other Simulation & Laboratory Faculty, Course Coordinators, Clinical Faculty, and students in support of simulation and laboratory activities for the School of Nursing (SoN). Workdays vary depending on the SoN courses’ and laboratory schedule. Simulation & Laboratory Faculty are required to become members of a simulation organization (Society for Simulation in Healthcare) or International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation (INACLS). This is a part-time position.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Major Responsibility One: School of Nursing Operations Processes (25% of time)
- Major Responsibility Two: Student and Faculty Support (65%)
- Major Responsibility Three: Regulatory and Accreditation (10%)
LIST OF TASKS FOR EACH MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY
1. Major Responsibility One: School of Nursing Operations Processes
- Required to become members of simulation organizations and encouraged to obtain Simulation Certification. i.e., Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
- Maintain current knowledge of best laboratory and simulation practices.
- Identifies new simulation opportunities and supports efforts to integrate new simulation activities into the nursing curriculum.
- Facilitates a safe and stimulating environment conducive to learning.
- Make recommendations to the Simulation and Laboratory Lead for supplies and equipment management of inventory of all simulation/lab supplies and equipment.
- Collaborate with Simulation & Laboratory team to provide input to the SoN Budget staff to order for the department.
- Collaborate with the Lead Faculty to select and supervise skills lab student workers when necessary.
- Identify and report any needed corrections or improvements to buildings/classrooms.
- Ensures all who utilize the facility follow infection control procedures and follow the rules and regulations for safety.
- Provide oversight for the maintenance and proper function of all simulation manikins and laboratory equipment utilized in the Simulation and Laboratory areas inclusive of equipment and supplies for graduate spaces when applicable.
- Be knowledgeable of emergency procedures and be able direct students, faculty, and Extended Learning staff (as needed) to ensure everyone’s safety.
- Manage any emergency situations that may occur on site such as student injuries and ensure follow up according to the student or faculty injury response policy.
- Responds to untoward events as needed, such as a faculty absence, or facility physical plant event which causes building closure.
- Always represent the School of Nursing to include exhibiting or demonstrating the nursing practice laboratory and its capabilities to selected groups of visitors.
2. Major Responsibility Two: Student and Faculty Support

- Collaborate with Simulation & Laboratory Lead, course leads, course coordinators, clinical faculty, and interprofessional faculty from the College, to identify and adjust the simulation to meet the learning objectives and identify positive actions to promote achievement of student learning outcomes through skills evaluation and simulation-based learning experience. Set up simulation systems on manikins to provide students opportunities to practice assessment skills.
- Collaborates with faculty to develop student’s clinical judgment and develop competency (knowledge, skills, attitudes), and behaviors. Guides students regarding pathophysiology, pharmacology, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills as they acquire and hone competency.
- Guide and orient when directed new clinical faculty to the Simulation and Laboratory spaces. Completes the Orientation Checklist as appropriate.
- Assist clinical faculty to develop student’s critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills, acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors for CSUSM nursing students.
- Set up equipment based on anticipated student needs aligning with courses and skills recently taught.
- Instructs clinical faculty on the use of all equipment.
- Assists faculty and students on the use of all equipment.
- Intervene as needed if equipment is mishandled or lab procedures are not followed.
- Notifies Lead faculty of issues with room condition not meeting department’s expectations.
- Set up the simulation theaters and laboratories/classrooms that are scheduled that week. Provides resources required for mastery of scheduled simulation activities (including skills) for each week. Restocks/refill usable items (i.e., imitation blood). Ensures manikins have appropriate equipment for realism of simulation scenarios.
- Assists with all simulation activities adhering to International Association of Clinical and Simulation Learning (INACLS) standards. To include, but not limited to:
- Ensure equipment required for simulation activities is prepared based on the scenario to ensure realism and that equipment is in operating condition prior to start time.
- Simulation Faculty are present for all aspects of simulation – pre-brief, operations of simulation, debrief, and evaluation.
- Simulation Faculty (or Simulation Technician when available) are present to operate the manikin during scenarios and guide Clinical Faculty with progression and cues required during every simulation.
- Simulation Faculty assist in every debriefing (degree of involvement is related directly to the Clinical Faculty’s experience and completion of the Debriefing Module and subsequent competency sign-off). With experienced Clinical Faculty trained in debriefing, Simulation Faculty will assist debriefing as a facilitator and additional observer.
- Assists with Standardized Patients
- Ensures room is set up based on scenarios and coordinates props/additional simulation devices as appropriate prior to the start of the activity.
- Ensures equipment for recording/viewing is ready as required.
- Simulation Faculty will assist Clinical Faculty with Prebrief and Debrief and be available during the Standardized Patient activity.
- Debriefing with Clinical Faculty is the same as outlined above.
- Provides input to Lead Faculty regarding simulation updates or revisions after each simulation activity.
- Specific Open Lab Responsibilities:
- When assigned for the semester, create and maintain Open Lab Scheduler within Community for their campus.
- Set up simulation systems on manikins to provide students opportunities to practice assessment skills.
- Set up equipment based on anticipated student needs aligning with courses and skills recently taught. Changes Open Lab opportunities as the semester progresses.
- Confirms manikins, room(s), and equipment are in working order and manikins have appropriate equipment for realism (foley catheter, chest tube, ostomy, etc.)
- Replaces broken equipment and notifies lead as necessary.
- Verifies all necessary supplies are available (med carts, drug guides, computer, patient labels, gloves, alcohol pads, etc.) Restocks/refills usable items (i.e., imitation blood).
- Greets/welcomes all students at the beginning of each session.
- Actively engages with students’ learning during Open Lab sessions.
- Ensures that students are using Open Lab time for clinical competency practice and not as a study hall.
- Dismiss students who are not engaged in laboratory learning activities. Document per open laboratory policy.
- Facilitates simulation recordings and assists clinical faculty in recording evaluation and review with students.

- . Operate and maintain proper function of all simulation manikins and other lab equipment.

- Support faculty, staff, and student satisfaction by serving as a resource to address concerns. Elevate issues to Lead Faculty as needed.
- Serve as a clinical resource for remediation and tutoring encompassing theory and clinical learning. May provide remediation instruction or proctoring of SafeMedicate exams if needed.
- Serve as a mentor to clinical faculty for remediation of high-risk students identified by faculty.
- Completes additional duties as assigned which may include, but is not limited to Elsevier, Simulation Handbook updates, program evaluation.
- Participates with SoN and CEHHS committee activities as assigned.
3. Major Responsibility Three: Regulatory and Accreditation

- Maintain policies and procedures outlined in the Simulation & Laboratory Handbook and according to Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accreditation standards.
- Ensures clinical faculty and students adhere to policies and guidelines including, but not limited to uniform policy within simulation and laboratory spaces, open lab no show and policy.
- Will obtain on average 10 CEUs related to simulation and nursing education per year.
- Assist the Laboratory Simulation Associate Director as directed to attain and maintain SSH accreditation and contribute to efforts to maintain current policies and procedures for simulation and skills lab.
- Assist the Laboratory/Simulation Associate Director as directed in quality improvement activities which may include:
- Facilitate students’ completion of assessment of simulation effectiveness to meet student learning outcomes.
- Facilitating the collection of faculty and student satisfaction surveys related to laboratory and simulation experiences.
- Contribute to interpretation of quality data reports to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation for the integration of simulation in clinical education.
- Effective use of evidenced-based practice in directing laboratory and simulation activities.
- Open Lab Responsibilities:
- When assigned, responsible for maintenance of records of students who come to Open Lab and those scheduled for remediation.
- Communicates with students and their clinical faculty when they have not complied with Simulation and Lab Policies, i.e., Open Lab Attendance Policy (No Shows) cc’ing the appropriate campus lead faculty and Associate Director for Simulation and Skills lab for trending purposes and action when required.
Minimum qualifications:
- MSN.
- Clinical nursing work experience within the previous 5 years.
- Experience in academic teaching or staff education.
- State licensure by California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Meet the School of Nursing’s requirements regarding current immunizations and CPR licensure.

Preferred qualifications:
- DNP or PhD in Nursing.
- Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.
Salary commensurate with degree level and experience
- Anticipated Hiring Salary: $5,329 - $5,770 per full-time month
- CSU Classification Salary: $4,530 - $11,994 per full-time month
