The School of Biomedical Sciences

As one of the largest teaching schools at UNSW, the School of Biomedical Sciences is uniquely placed to inspire the next generation of science and medical graduates. It plays a key role in arming future doctors, health practitioners, biomedical scientists and a broader community of health professionals, each of whom will bring a specialised and diverse skill set to the frontiers of medical science.

The school holds strong cross-faculty connections with chemistry, maths, physics and engineering; along with academic staff and key partners whose work is based in the clinical or biotech space, this creates a naturally synergistic and innovative environment.

Why this role matters:

This position will be expected to contribute towards the research effort of UNSW and to develop their research expertise through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to the exploration of the immune response in human samples and/or pre-clinical models. Under the supervision of the Senior Lecturer, the role will perform cutting edge profiling of the immune response in a variety of sophisticated models. The role will utilise flow cytometry, multiomic immune cell sequencing, humoral immune assays and cell culture technologies with the goal of exploring immune responses to generate knowledge outputs and translational research discoveries.

The role is well supported by a diverse, experienced and collaborative team. The successful candidate will be given opportunities to build their laboratory skills.

Some key accountabilities:

Lead, perform and optimise new and established assays to evaluate adaptive immune responses in animal-based studies. This includes colony management, animal interventions, sample collection and preparation for flow cytometry, including sophisticated antigen specific immune cell assays, next-generation immune cell sequencing (e.g. including 10X, rhapsody, SMART-Seq, bulk repertoire sequencing, and tapestry), and ex vivo humoral immune assessment assays e.g. ELISAs, cell culture assays (e.g. transfection and Pseudoviral transfections),

Key skills and experience:

  • A university degree in Science/Advanced Science or related discipline, with honours and 6+ years of relevant research experience.
  • Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Ability to analyse and solve problems in a methodical and logical manner.
