The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Open Cut Examiner to lead production and safety efforts at Pembroke Resource’s Olive Downs Complex in the Bowen Basin. This new autonomous project, located 40 kilometres southwest of Moranbah, began operations in early 2023. Thiess has secured a five-year contract to deliver comprehensive mining services, including mine planning, overburden removal, drill and blast, load and haul, water management, rehabilitation, and infrastructure construction.

About The Role

As an Open Cut Examiner, your key responsibilities will include identifying hazards and risks through regular inspections, audits, and behavioural observations. Working an even-time 7/7 roster, you will:

  • Support the SSE in implementing the Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and strive to exceed compliance standards.
  • Play an active role in incident investigations to identify root causes, document findings, and implement corrective actions in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and auditing the SHMS related to mining activities in and around the mine excavation.
  • Lead, coach, and develop team members by setting clear expectations, monitoring performance, mentoring, and enforcing correct behaviours and disciplinary procedures.
  • Coordinate with Mining Supervisors to address safety, compliance, and production issues promptly.
  • Participate actively in daily pre-start meetings with the production crew.
  • Inspect surface mine excavation areas before mining activities begin to ensure acceptable risk levels.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of excavation and surrounding areas during mining activities to maintain acceptable risk levels.
  • Perform routine audits to ensure only qualified personnel carry out authorised tasks and that equipment is used according to design parameters and correct operating techniques

About you 

You will have an Open Cut Examiners Certificate of Competency for Surface Coal Mines and proven experience working as an OCE in an open-cut mining environment.

Additionally, you will have:

  • Coal Mining Industry Competencies RIIRIS301, RIICOM301B, RIIOHS301A and R11RIS402A
  • Competent in MS Office
  • Ability to read and interpret mine plans
  • Sound knowledge of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 (QLD) including relevant regulations, guidelines and Australian standards
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to rapidly adapt to changes in operational situations
