The Librarian 1 in the LaValley Law Library oversees library circulation and reserve functions in the College of Law, as well as provides night and weekend supervision of the library, including the direct supervision of ten to fifteen student employees. The circulation staff and students provide access to local materials, course reserves, media, and materials borrowed from other libraries. This is the law library’s main service point, and circulation staff regularly answer questions regarding the collection, aid patrons in locating print and electronic resources, and refer to librarians as appropriate. Excellent customer service is a must. The circulation supervisor will ensure all student employees are well trained and meet our service expectations. This is a hands-on supervisory position, and as such will work shifts at the desk and actively participate in all duties. This position has an expected work schedule of Sunday – Thursday 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm, subject to change if library hours or other circumstances change. Occasional morning and weekday coverage may be necessary.

Duties of the Librarian 1 can include:
• Managing all day-to-day circulation functions for the LaValley Law Library.
• Administering the hiring process for student employees.
• Taking a leadership role in creating circulation policies/procedures and ensures they are properly adhered to.
• Maintaining policy/procedure manuals.
• Maintaining patron database.
• Overseeing circulation billing and collection activities and collaborates with the Treasurer’s Office regarding aged accounts.
• Participating in library-wide planning; serves on library committees as needed.
• Participating as member of OhioLINK ICS committee.
• Creating and maintaining monthly desk and work schedules.
• Ensuring compliance with OhioLINK policies/procedures.
• Ensuring all job duties are being performed in the most effective and efficient manner.
• Ensuring ILS circulation module is configured properly; notices are accurate and delivered as required, loan rules working properly, fines generating as they should, etc.
• Ensuring staff are properly trained to respond to emergency situations such as fire, severe weather, theft, hostile patrons, and equipment failures.
• Troubleshootingsoftware and technology problems related to the ILS circulation module.
• Overseeing all activities with regard to the circulation of materials, including aiding patrons with the location of items in the physical collection, and accessing those in the electronic collection.
• Assisting patrons with library account inquiries, e.g. fines, overdue books, etc.
• Offering excellent customer service by responding to patron questions, complaints, problems and suggestions according to library service standard.
• Overseeing the shelving crew to ensure returned materials are processed properly.
• Overseeing the processing of both print and electronic course reserves, including cataloging, creating course records, creating links, making print materials shelf ready, maintaining statistics, troubleshooting problems and removing materials as needed.
• Managing all aspects of OhioLINK Pcirc processing; coordinates shipments, troubleshoots problems (many times with input from consortia members), runs and processes reports per consortia policies; oversees annual reconciliation.
• Recording, maintaining and evaluating circulation statistics for decision making purposes.
• Continuously evaluating circulation functions and makes necessary adjustments for ongoing improvement.
• Administering circulation staff performance appraisals.


Minimum Qualifications:

Required education/experience/licensing:

• Master’s degree
• Three years’ circulation experience in an academic library.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
• Evidence of ability to successfully troubleshoot problems.

Communication and other skills:
• Proven history of offering excellent customer service.
• Effective written and oral communication skills.
• Evidence of ability to work well with diverse populations.
• Strong interpersonal skills.

Physical requirements
• Ability to lift 35 pounds
• Ability to push carts of books

Preferred Qualifications:

• Evidence of successfully coordinating, directing, or supervising the work of others.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo library systems platforms Demonstrated knowledge of Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Sierra client.
• Evidence of increased job responsibilities within an academic library.
• Applied knowledge of OhioLINK; applied knowledge in the use of research databases.
