The Advising and Career Coach assists justice-involved students in identifying and overcoming barriers to college enrollment and success, developing academic and career goals, and transitioning into meaningful employment.  The Advising and Career Coach will assist with enrollment, financial aid, and job skills training.  This position provides holistic support, connecting students to college and community resources and tracking their progress from enrollment to job retention.  

Key Responsibilities 

 

30% - Academic Guidance and Retention:

  • Assist students with the college application process, financial aid, and registration.  Monitor academic progress, provide intervention for at-risk students, and connect them with tutoring and study skills workshops.

 

25% - Individualized Coaching and Advising:

  • Conduct one-on-one assessments and coaching sessions to help students identifying career interests, evaluate their background and skills, and develop an individualized education and career plan.

 

10% - Program Development and Outreach:

  • Plan, design, and deliver workshops and orientation sessions on topics like financial aid, career pathways, and life skills.  Actively recruit students for college programs and represent the college at community events.

 

10% - Career Development and Job Readiness:

  • Improve job search skills, including resume writing, interviewing techniques, and workplace etiquette.  Plan and implement career exploration opportunities like industry visits and career fairs.

 

10% - Barrier Mitigation and Support:

  • Address the specific needs of underrepresented and disadvantaged students (e.g., housing, childcare, transportation, substance abuse counseling) by providing referrals to appropriate support services and community organizations.

 

5% - Data Management and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress in information systems.  Track and report participation, persistence, and completion outcomes to inform program evaluation and improvement.

 

5% - Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Build and maintain relationships with internal college departments (e.g., Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, Faculty) and external partners (e.g., employers, governmental agencies, community groups) to ensure seamless support and alignment with local workforce needs.

 

5% Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications 

 

Education 

  • Associate’s degree in counseling, social work, human services, criminal justice, or a related field.

Experience 

  • Three (3) or more years of progressively responsible experience in advising, case management, career counseling, job placement, working with justice-involved or disadvantaged populations, or related fields.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and listening skills, with the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Empathetic and compassionate demeanor with a strong commitment to helping individuals achieve their goals.
  • Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
