The Career Services Specialist position involves career counseling and direct assistance to students seeking employment with meaningful connections to their degree program. Career specialists assist students in developing strategies and skills in exploring career options, identifying jobs, applying for jobs, networking, preparing for interviews and writing resumes. The Career Specialist collaborates with employers to facilitate their employee recruitment efforts with respect to our students/alumni.

 

 

Key Responsibilities 

40%

  • Develop & implement career-related services and support of unit mission and college strategic goals.
  • Conduct group and individual appointments with students in need of career assistance, assist students with the development and implementation of individual career plans, job search skills, and recommend appropriate college resources to meet career goals.
  • Develop and present workshops on career related topics, including, but not limited to: career decision making, lifelong career planning, job search techniques, resume writing, and other topics as appropriate.
  • Development and implement career related events such as career and job fairs, mock interviews, and career guest speakers. Assist students obtain career-related work experiences and internships.
  • Manage job search/career assessment software and website and document all interactions in the appropriate institutional systems.

  • Maintain career-counseling records, program records, and utilize/deploy career assessments.
  • Engage students through a variety of communication channels. This may include video, calls, emails, and other proactive outreach methods.
  • Collaborate with other departments and functional areas to deliver an optimal student experience from inquiry through to graduation.

25%

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of all academic, registration, programs, policies and procedures including institutional policies and federal and state regulations. Comply with applicable federal and state laws as well as BRCC policies.

Minimum Qualifications 

 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field 

 

A bachelor’s degree may substitute for five (5) years of professional-level experience. 

 

Experience 

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

Advanced:

  • Excellent communication and listening abilities: persuasive and negotiation skills, strong professional writing, public speaking, interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Project management and planning capabilities.
  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner.
  • Ability to gather and collect data and build reports using analytics.
  • Customer service skills combined with a strong work ethic and a self-motivated approach toward achieving consistent results.

 

Proficient:

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively with an ethnic, cultural and socially diverse student population.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and highly sensitive student information.
  • Ability to multi-task and deliver work product under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate with other professionals on projects and tasks.

Preferred Education

  • Master's Degree

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in academic support service programs (e.g., career counseling, academic advising, admissions, and financial aid).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Banner, learning management systems, academic program sequencing.
