Summary of Position: |
The Director of the Center for Latino Studies is a critical contributor to the advancement of Ferris State University’s continuing commitment to providing accessible, inclusive, and equitable educational opportunity to Latino students. The Director collaborates with enrollment services, academic departments and programs, and various national, state, and local agencies to further Latino student recruitment and persistence to timely degree attainment. The Director furthers efforts to promote Latino student engagement and belonging, maintains close relationships with Latino students and their supporters, Latino communities and community organizations, businesses, high schools, community colleges, and state and national organizations committed to Latino college success. The primary work location is at the main university campus in Big Rapids, MI, however, necessary travel is required to additional statewide campus locations, high schools, and various community and partnering agencies. The anticipated start date for this position is May of 2023. However, this is an estimated date and can be revised if needed. |

Required Education: |
Master’s Degree in Social Work, Education, Spanish, Social Justice, Community Leadership, Latino Studies or related field. |

Required Work Experience: |
Two years administrative and direct experience working with high school, Community College, and/or 4-year University students seeking higher education; experience working with community based organizations in the Latino and non-Latino sectors; and have experience working in a diverse environment, with youth, and communities. |
|
Required Licenses and Certifications: |
Valid Michigan Driver’s license.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: |
Familiar with the Latino communities of Grand Rapids, West Michigan, and throughout the state of Michigan. Prior experience and demonstrated success in working with a Diversity and Inclusion-based mentoring program, international student populations, and first-generation students. Experience working with social and traditional media, creating and administering websites as well as Customer Relations Management tools, specifically Navigate. Bilingual in Spanish and English with demonstrated professional written and oral proficiency. |

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: |
Assist in recruitment, retention, and graduation of students, by maintaining close relationships with broader Latino Community Organizations, businesses, High Schools, and Community Colleges. Assume responsibility for leading the work involved in Ferris State University’s efforts to receive designation as a Hispanic-serving institution. Create and maintain student support services, including academic support, coaching, and advising for students in the offices of CLS. Create/support initiatives to create cultural, social, political programming around Latino communities of Michigan and the U.S. Collaborate with Director, Center for Latino Business and Economic Development, to develop, support and expand pathways for Latino students to enter Ferris as traditional, non-traditional, certificate and non-certificate credentialing and degree programming, including, but not limited to, the Promesa pipeline programming. Manage day-tody operations of CLS. Maintain confidentiality of student information. Reports directly to Dean of Retention and Student Services. Communicate student concerns to Dean of Retention and Student Services and/or other campus personnel. Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Any other duties assigned within the position classification area. |

Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: |
Serve as a contact for Latino community based organizations including the partnership between Ferris State University and West Michigan Hispanic and Grand Rapids Chambers of Commerce. Pursue outside sources of funding (e.g., grants). |
|
Skills and Abilities: |
Proficiency in MS Office, specifically Excel and Word. Must be able to communicate effectively in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing. Demonstrate commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion. |
