THE DEPARTMENT:
The University Police Department (UPD) is responsible for law enforcement, physical security, public safety, and emergency response at Cal Poly Pomona. The department is staffed by trained police officers, professional civilian staff, and auxiliary personnel, operating 24 hours-a-day, year-round. The police officers of the UPD have statewide police authority and are vested with the same law enforcement powers and policing responsibilities as municipal police and sheriff departments in any California community. The department serves as the "first responder'' for a broad range of crisis issues on the campus include medical aid call, injuries, and environmental emergencies. The department is responsible for response to all emergencies, crime reports, and investigations on campus (except homicides and missing persons per the Kristin Smart Act). In addition, the department offers a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the safety and security of the community and support the mission of the university. These responsibilities are carried out through a set of core values that reflect commitment to the highest standards of excellence and incorporate the community oriented and 21st Century policing philosophies. The Parking & Transportation Services Division is dedicated to maintaining accessible and user-friendly parking and transportation facilities and services. The objective is to manage parking resources efficiently so that students, faculty, staff, and visitors can park conveniently. We also maintain commuter programs, promote transportation alternatives, mitigate traffic congestion, and reduce parking demand through a variety of ridesharing programs, services, and incentives. The University Police Department and Parking & Transportation Services are part of the Student Affairs Division whose mission is to build inclusive communities, cultivate holistic wellbeing, and advance student success, incorporating the values of collaboration, inclusivity, integrity, innovation, and student-centeredness.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Security Services
- Patrols campus on foot, bike, or vehicle to protect campus community and visitors from hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing and other crimes.
- Assist in the enforcement of campus rules and regulations; and reports hazardous conditions.
- Opens, closes, secures, and monitors campus facilities; identifies and notifies UPD of suspicious activities; notifies police, fire or medical services when needed.
Public Safety Support
- Provides support and assistance to the UPD which may include providing back-up support for dispatch, records, and evidence bureau.
- Assist with training and public speaking on crime prevention techniques and drug awareness.
- Monitors lighting, telephones, alarms and other safety equipment throughout the campus to ensure they are functioning properly; participates in emergency response as needed; takes incident/accident reports and responds to these situations as needed.
Parking Support
- Enforces parking rules and regulations through issuing and selling parking permits, patrolling parking lots and issues citations for parking and other standing violations, as appropriate.
- Appears in court for parking-related citations; and direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic during peak hours, special events, emergencies, and as needed.
Campus Community
- Support Assists in the physical logistics for campus special events and emergencies and staff the visitor kiosk.
- Provides general information and assistance to the public; and provides escort and citizen assistance.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma/GED - High school diploma or equivalent and three to six months related experience would normally achieve these entry qualifications.
- Driver License, Valid and in State Required and
- Entry to the first level within this classification requires high school level reading and writing abilities and possession of a California Driver’s License. The nature of the duties may also require successful completion of a background check, physical and psychological exam and/or the ability to attend Police Officers Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) programs related to public safety support and dispatch activities. Knowledge of and the ability to learn how to use the applicable public safety related equipment and systems are essential.
- Working knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to campus security, public safety, and parking. Working knowledge of alarm and radio systems. Ability to detect and respond appropriately to potential hazardous or crime situations. Ability to observe and recall details and incidents. Ability to act and resolve parking and traffic problems. Ability to write standard incident reports in a clear and concise manner. Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of individuals including the campus community, general public and law enforcement personnel. Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality

Background Check

CSU Classification Salary Range
This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 7. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $3,680 and maximum $5,310. per month. University Driving Requirement
Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
