Position Summary

San Diego State University is seeking a licensed and skilled Psychiatrist to join our Student Health Services (SHS) team. Under the direct supervision of the SHS Medical Director, the Physician-Specialty Services Psychiatrist will provide efficient and cost-effective psychiatric care to SDSU students. This position involves working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and other healthcare staff, to support student well-being and academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Psychiatric Assessment and Treatment: Provide psychiatric services to SDSU students, including assessment and management of mental health conditions.
  • Collaborative Care: Collaborate with providers from Student Health Services (SHS), Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS), and the Student Ability and Success Center (SASC) to deliver coordinated care.
  • Clinical Supervision: Participate in the clinical supervision of other healthcare professionals such as Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Registered Nurses.
  • Service Improvement and Student Support: Assist in improving the overall mental health services provided to students and contribute to their academic success and well-being.

Position Information

  • This is a part-time (.75 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2026, with the possibility of reappointment.
  • This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with June 2025 as the anticipated off month.
  • This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.  
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University.  Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Communications Services; Counseling & Psychological Services; Cultural and Identity Centers; Center for Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Military Veterans Program; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Disability Center; Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.     

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics and psychiatry.

Education and Experience

Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties.

Key Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of and the ability to effectively and efficiently apply the principles and methods essential to the diagnosis and treatment of medical and/or mental health disorders within the scope of the assigned specialty.
  • Understanding of community resources for referral of medical and/or mental health care and treatment in the specialty beyond the scope of the Student Health Center or Counseling Services practice
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field and the assigned specialty.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable professional ethics standards and patient privacy.
  • Ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center or Counseling Services personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners and specialists, as well as students, administrators, staff and faculty.
  • Computer skills competency, including word processing, email, and electronic medical records documentation.
  • One or more years of post-residency psychiatric clinical experience in a college health service or with adolescent or young adult age groups preferred.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
  • Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties.
  • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $15,000 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $14,419 - $28,062 per month.
