Technical Officer, Rural Clinical Campuses

  • Employment Type: Part - time (21 hours a week)
  • Duration: Fixed Term contract until 30th June 2028
  • Remuneration: $92,265 base pro rata, plus 17% superannuation and leave loading 
  • Work rights required: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must hold full rights to work in Australia to be considered for this position.
  • WWCC: A current Working With Children Check (WWCC) is a requirement of the role.

UNSW Rural (Wagga Wagga campus)

UNSW Rural brings world-class medical education to rural and regional Australia, delivering the full 6-year medical course at our rural campuses across several locations. Delivery of the medicine program across UNSW Rural Clinical Campuses is primarily face-to-face - on campus, with staff being available and accessible daily. Students build strong relationships and become part of the local medical community, benefitting from more personal interaction with clinicians, other academics and professional staff. UNSW’s program has strongly supported the aims of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program delivering excellence in rural medical education and student experience end-to-end. Details of the role

The Technical Officer works closely with academic staff, laboratory demonstrators and students to provide high level quality technical support in teaching and research laboratories with a strong focus on WHS compliance and requirements.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled professional to contribute to the delivery of high-quality rural teaching and research activities in a dynamic laboratory environment. You will play a key role in ensuring laboratories operate efficiently and safely while supporting practical learning and research outcomes. The position offers varied responsibilities, including equipment and compliance management, laboratory preparation, technical training, troubleshooting and inventory responsibility. Ideal candidates will bring strong biomedical sciences knowledge, excellent organisational skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys working collaboratively, providing expert technical support and helping create an outstanding laboratory experience for students, and supporting staff to deliver practical components of the course.

The role of Technical Officer reports to the Administrative Officer at the identified campus and has no direct reports.

Some key skills required:

  • A relevant qualification or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Biomedical Sciences with extensive understanding of the relevant discipline and/or similar level of experience working in a teaching laboratory.
  • Ensure efficient running of teaching and/or research laboratories through the provision of quality technical support including preparation setup and prior testing of practical components to ensure satisfactory class delivery and turnaround of practical classes and/or labs.
  • Provide technical assistance to students and staff, including demonstration of common techniques and the operation of equipment and adapt practicals by identifying suitable technical alternatives, where required.
  • Provide induction, instrument training and troubleshooting for staff and students ensuring expert support during the delivery of classes.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective operations of specialist laboratories to a high standard.
  • Demonstrated capacity to write safe working procedures and manage risks compliant within UNSW guidelines.
  • Ability to find technical solutions to teaching and research needs.
