The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 170 academic, research and professional staff. In 2025, the school obtained $22M in research funding, produced over 800 scientific publications and is frequently rated among the top schools across UNSW in student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science and Oceanography.

The Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences conducts high-quality teaching in interdisciplinary, skills-focused science courses, leading the team that delivers the capstone subjects SCIF1000 Skills in Science and SCIF1001 Advancing Science.


About the role

  • Level C ($161k - $185k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Continuing
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Leadership of the team delivering SCIF1000 and SCIF1001 including course convening, and collaboration with academics delivering other Science Faculty (SCIF) courses.
  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning.
  • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback at both course and program level using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
  • Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation and advice on Educational Learning Plans (ELPs)) and as a cohort, and implement inclusive teaching practices aligned with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) principles) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
  • Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance.
  • Make a positive contribution by leading School meetings and seminars and be a member of School/Faculty committees as required.
  • Work collaboratively with peers across the UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour, develop learning and teaching strategies and resources and contribute to an exchange of teaching ideas, and mentoring of staff.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in a biological, earth or environmental science discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience using, implementing and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
  • Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others with the ability to advance and lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
