The Project Officer plays a key role within Centre for Ecosystem Science, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science in providing practical and efficient project support for the Ecosystem Indicators Workflows project, including the project core team, contributors and key stakeholders.

The Ecosystem Indicators Workflows project addresses a critical need for transparent, reproducible, and modular workflows to support the development of ecosystem-specific indicators with scientific rigour. Ecosystem-specific indicators are essential for applications such as ecosystem accounting, ecosystem risk assessment, environmental management and reporting. This project will develop research infrastructure that provides the tools, services and documentation that guide users through the ecosystem-specific indicator development process.

The role entails providing project coordination and support, research assistance, reporting and analytical support, developing communications, building key internal and external relationships, assisting in the execution of engagement and communication activities relevant to project, and providing administrative support for key programs and projects.


About the role

  • Level 6 - $103K - $110K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – approximately 20 months (to April 2028)
  • Part-time (17.5 hours per week)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Lead and manage partner co-ordination, communication, engagement and knowledge exchange for ‘Ecosystem Indicators Workflows’ ARDC co-investment project.
  • Support the development of project plans and schedules and participate in planning processes as required.
  • Monitor, track and report on the status of project deliverables to ensure time, cost and quality metrics are in line with approved project plans, liaising with finance managers when required.
  • Provide practical and proactive project support and administrative services to project team and stakeholders.
  • Assess and monitor project risks and issues and provide solutions where applicable.
  • Coordinate project administration including coordination of workshops and meetings, minute taking, manage assigned actions and follow-ups and project status reporting.
  • Develop and manage effective communications with key stakeholders, both internal and external to the project.
  • Assist and contribute to the communication and engagement activities outlined in the projects’ engagement and communication plan.
  • Support adherence to UNSW governance pathways to ensure projects are managed within a defined, consistent and proven set of rules for project development.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Sound stakeholder management skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including spreadsheets, text editors and publication software, and basic familiarity with statistical and mapping software and software development tools as related to the project objectives.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Project experience, with an understanding of the project life cycle and development of project plans, objectives and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • General understanding of Australian ecosystem ecology.
  • General understanding of the Australian eResearch landscape and community-driven research infrastructure.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
