The Organisation
The Centre for Molecular Oncology is a new research centre established within the School of Biomedical Sciences at UNSW which is dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of cancer. The Centre applies basic, translational and clinical approaches to understanding cancer biology through patient-centred discovery programs and uses this information to improve patient outcomes through clinical trials.
Details of the role
The Research Officer plays a key role in supporting clinical research projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers within the Centre for Molecular Oncology. The position will provide technical and research assistance to senior research staff in activities associated with the Surveillance Study in Multi-Organ Cancer Prone Syndromes (SMOC+) and the Surveillance Study in Multi-Organ Cancer Predisposition Syndromes in Paediatrics (SMOC Jnr). The role will require contribution and application of knowledge in the field of molecular oncology.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful clinical research programs focused on cancer predisposition and surveillance. Working closely with senior researchers and clinical teams, you will support the design, coordination and delivery of complex research activities, from data management and analysis through to biospecimen coordination and stakeholder engagement. You will apply your expertise in molecular oncology and clinical research to ensure studies are delivered to a high standard, supporting publications, ethics processes and the timely return of results to patients. Ideal for a detail-oriented and collaborative research professional, this role enables you to make a meaningful contribution to research that directly informs patient care and advances understanding in cancer genomics.
The role reports to the Research Manager – SMOC+ and SMOC Jnr, supporting the Centre for Molecular Oncology and has no direct reports.
Some key skills required:
- A university degree in science or related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training or experience
- Demonstrated experience in the implementation, coordination and management of clinical research projects
- Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones
- Manage the technical aspects of databases, including coordinating and executing data cleaning, data management processes and ensuring research integrity in research databases
- Perform quantitative/qualitative data analyses as required by the research project
- Proactively assist with research reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, ethics applications and progress reports
- Lead coordination of biospecimen activities in the research programs including preparation and tracking of collection kits, liaising with pathology services to obtain tumour samples, and organising sample transfer and storage
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands
