The Opportunity

  • Employment Type: Full time (38 hours per week)
  • Duration: Continuing. Permanent
  • Remuneration: $76,959 - $85,877 (depending on exp.) + 17% super + annual leave loading
  • Multisite role: rostered between UNSW Randwick and UNSW Kensington Campuses

Animal Services is a centralised unit that supports research at UNSW by managing animal care and facilities across the Kensington and Randwick campuses. Our mission is to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical compliance while supporting the needs of researchers.

As an Animal Technician, your primary responsibilities will include daily animal care and husbandry, environmental monitoring, and facility maintenance. You may also assist researchers and students with technical support. This role reports to the Animal Services Manager and has no direct reports.

 Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily care and husbandry for a variety of animals, ensuring appropriate nutrition, hygiene, enrichment, and environmental monitoring.
  • Monitor and report on animal wellbeing; maintain precise records
  • Support cleaning and maintenance of DAFF & OGTR-certified areas, including cage cleaning, preparation, and sterilisation
  • Collaborate with team members to meet daily objectives; weekend and public holiday roster participation may be required
  • Support research staff and assist other team members as needed

Skills and Experience Required

  • Completion (or progress towards completion) of a TAFE Certificate, Associate Diploma or equivalent qualifications in Animal Studies, Animal Health, Veterinary Science or Animal Technology
  • Demonstrated experience in animal handling and care of laboratory animals, particularly rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs and sheep
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Demonstrated record-keeping skills with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and organisational skills
  • Competence in using databases and Microsoft Office 

Note: this position is based full-time at the UNSW Randwick/Kensington campus, with typical hours of 7:30AM to 3:30PM (start times can be adjusted to accommodate individual availability)
