Why your role matters
The Senior Interior Designer leads the strategic and operational delivery of interior design requirements across a diverse campus portfolio, ranging from high-tech research facilities and teaching spaces to retail and student accommodation. Reporting to the Head of Design, this client-side role acts as a critical pivot point within Estate Management, requiring high emotional intelligence and credibility to maintain active stakeholder relationships and ensure project alignment. The position demands a high level of technical competence in materials, fixtures, and sustainability, alongside proficiency in Adobe Suite and CAD to produce the heavy briefing documentation that sets expectations for an external ecosystem of consultants.
The ideal candidate will bring experience from large environments, such as major commercial operators or property developers, where they have managed complex design standards without a direct production team. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply sophisticated design principles across a rare variety of building typologies, focusing on what specifically succeeds within a large-scale institutional environment. By fostering a safe and world-class campus, the lead ensures that interior solutions directly enable the university’s broader strategic goals for a sustainable and innovative physical estate.
About the Role
The successful applicant will be required to undertake and have experience in the following areas of expertise:
- Establish and manage design principles for major new developments, refurbishments, and interior, retail, or ground plane fit-out projects.
- Provide strategic advice to the leadership team by monitoring design progress, identifying risks, and reporting on actions in collaboration with external consultants and stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain interior design standards to ensure compliance with statutory, legislative, and WHS requirements while aligning with strategic initiatives.
- Lead strategic project development by facilitating consultation, securing stakeholder buy-in, and ensuring adherence to all project policies and procedures.
- Manage budgets and resources for interior design outcomes, providing detailed financial reports to support senior management in achieving organizational objectives.
- Oversee the full project lifecycle by establishing streamlined procurement for furniture and fixtures, and evaluating completed works to refine future standards.
About You
- Degree in interior design or an equivalent combination of extensive professional experience and specialized training.
- Advanced interior design expertise, specifically regarding the detailed documentation and execution of complex projects.
- High-level communication skills, with a focus on producing precise written deliverables and detailed design drawings.
- Proven ability to manage financial plans, including budget allocation and forecasting within major institutional environments.
- Strong consultation and negotiation skills to effectively influence and engage with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Technical proficiency in design software, particularly Adobe Creative Suite, alongside the organizational ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
