Why your role matters
The Senior Data Steward is a senior advisory position within the Enterprise Data Office responsible for operationalising and implementing UNSW’s Data Governance Framework. This role ensures that governance artefacts, data quality, and compliance practices are embedded university-wide through partnerships with various business units. By delivering high-quality analysis and reporting, the Senior Data Steward aligns operational activities with the University's data strategy, privacy obligations, and continuous improvement goals.
The role reports to the Head of Data Governance and carries no direct reports.
About the Role
The successful applicant will be required to undertake and have experience in the following areas of expertise:
- Lead the creation, operationalisation, and implementation of governance policies, standards, and procedures to improve data quality and consistency across the university.
- Act as a senior advisor to business units and domain owners, providing expert guidance on governance practices and resolving complex or ambiguous issues.
- Oversee current state assessments and audits to identify governance gaps, performing advanced data queries to provide actionable recommendations for risk mitigation.
- Maintain metadata repositories and document data lineage to ensure full traceability, reproducibility, and auditability of all data assets and transformation processes.
- Partner with Privacy, Compliance, and Legal teams to ensure all governance practices are ethically aligned and meet legal and institutional requirements.
- Drive stakeholder engagement and capability uplift by designing and delivering training, toolkits, and communications to increase data literacy and framework adoption.
- Support the Senior Data Governance Manager in representing the Enterprise Data Office in governance forums and collaborative initiatives across diverse data domains.
About You
- Relevant tertiary qualification in a related field combined with extensive experience in data governance and stewardship.
- Advanced technical skills in data querying using SQL or Power BI, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and Visio.
- Proven experience in data quality, risk, metadata, and master data management, including the ability to operationalise data quality rules.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex data into clear insights and recommendations.
- Professional documentation skills for creating and maintaining clear policy, procedural, and technical standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders across all organizational levels.
- Familiarity with DAMA DMBoK or DCAM frameworks and higher education regulatory obligations, with governance tool experience preferred.
