The Governance Lead (AI) is responsible for the establishment, implementation, and ongoing operation of governance and compliance frameworks for AI systems at UNSW. Reporting to the Head of AI Ecosystem, the role ensures that all AI initiatives — including the use of OpenAI / ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Power Platform AI tools — are developed, deployed, and used responsibly and ethically in accordance with the UNSW AI Services & Governance Framework, University policies, and Australian legislative requirements. The Governance Lead (AI) works collaboratively with program, technology, data, and cybersecurity teams to manage AI risk, maintain compliance artefacts, and enable safe innovation. This position reports to the Head of AI Ecosystem and has no direct reports.
Accountabilities:
- Lead the development and ownership of the UNSW AI Services & Governance Framework, ensuring it covers all AI systems and tools, including OpenAI / ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Power Platform AI solutions.
- Maintain and oversee the University AI Register, capturing approved AI models, data sources, prompts, use cases, and governance decisions.
- Coordinate AI risk assessments (privacy, security, ethical, bias) and maintain documentation for compliance and audit readiness.
- Develop and manage governance artefacts — including policies, standards, templates, and operating procedures — to enable safe AI adoption and provide support across the broader UNSW community.
- Support the Head of AI Ecosystem in facilitating the AI Governance Committee, including reporting and decision documentation.
- Provide advisory guidance to UNSW staff on the ethical and responsible use of ChatGPT, Copilot, and Power Platform AI tools in academic and administrative settings.
- Collaborate with delivery teams (Program, Technology, Architecture, Engineering) to ensure AI deployments comply with assurance and regulatory standards, while providing direction on compliance and assurance requirements.
- Partner with Cyber Security, Legal, Risk, Privacy, and Research Integrity teams to ensure cohesive governance of AI activities.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance and responsible use of AI tools, supporting transparency, accountability, and human oversight.
- Stay current with evolving AI legislation, standards (ISO/IEC 42001), and global best practices, updating UNSW frameworks accordingly.
- Develop awareness programs and training materials promoting responsible use of OpenAI / ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and AI-powered university tools.

- Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
Who you are:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Governance, Risk, Compliance, Information Management, or related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in technology or digital governance, preferably including AI, data, or cybersecurity.
- Deep understanding of Responsible AI frameworks and ethical governance practices.
- Knowledge of cloud-based AI services including OpenAI / ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Power Platform AI tools (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI).
- Experience designing and maintaining governance artefacts — policies, standards, registers, and assurance templates.
- Understanding of privacy and data protection legislation, particularly the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams in governance and delivery contexts.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, including the ability to brief senior stakeholders on AI compliance risks and issues.
- Familiarity with AWS and Azure environments and their AI service governance controls.
- High attention to detail, analytical skills, and a methodical approach to compliance management.
- Certification in AI governance, GRC, or ethical technology (e.g., ISO/IEC 42001, COBIT, or equivalent) (desirable).
- Experience working in the higher education or public sector environment (desirable).
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
