Position Summary
The Technical Assistant supports the delivery of research infrastructure and operational services within UNSW Medicine & Health, contributing to a high-quality laboratory environment across multiple on-campus and UNSW-managed off-campus facilities. As part of the Medicine & Health Research Infrastructure and Operational Services (MEDRIOS) team, the role provides routine technical and laboratory support to a large and diverse research community within the UNSW Biomedical Precinct.
Reporting to the Technical Team Leader, the Technical Assistant assists with the day-to-day operations of research laboratories, including equipment maintenance, glassware processing, autoclaving, disinfecting, waste disposal, and general laboratory housekeeping. The role also involves preparing media and solutions for researchers, conducting monthly Mycoplasma testing, coordinating deliveries and storage of laboratory supplies, and supporting compliance with safety and legislative requirements.
Skills & Experience
- Completion of Year 10 or 12 and relevant experience, or completion of a Certificate or Associate Diploma in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to provide high level customer service to a wide range of stakeholders of various backgrounds and levels of seniority.
- Sound organisational skills, with proven ability to exercise judgment over task sequencing and solve simple problems associated with workflows.
- Effective written and electronic record keeping skills, with attention to detail, including proficiency with relevant computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, email and database applications.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently, including under direction when performing more complex tasks.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
