UNSW Rural (Coffs Harbour)

UNSW Rural brings world-class medical education to rural and regional Australia, delivering the full 6-year medical course at our rural campuses across several locations. Face-to-face teaching is critical to rural program delivery as students build strong relationships with and benefit from more personal interaction with clinicians and other academics and become a part of the local medical community. UNSW’s program has strongly supported the aims of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program for over 25-years, delivering excellence in rural medical education and student experience.

Details of the role

UNSW’s Education Focussed (EF) roles enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students. Those who are appointed to this prestigious specialism will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities.

The Director of Medical Education, Rural, is an academic leadership position within UNSW Rural, School of Clinical Medicine, responsible for the academic program alignment and teaching quality at the identified Rural Clinical Campus. The position holder will demonstrate a commitment to high quality teaching, developing and leading a comprehensive education program through a culture of best practice that leads clinical and other academics in the delivery of the undergraduate and post-graduate programs at the campus, whilst working collaboratively with professional and technical staff supporting the operational resourcing and program administration at the campus and across the UNSW Rural.

The role requires a strong working relationship with the Head of School and the Manager, UNSW Rural, as well as other senior academic and professional staff across the School and Faculty. The position holder will develop and lead a unified UNSW presence enhancing the university profile in rural medical teaching excellence and research that directly supports the LHD and Primary Health Networks. Promoting and advancing rural medical training opportunities and pathways that build our rural and remote health workforce to address and improve the health of local communities is an important focus, and part of the rural RHMT program delivery.

The position reports to the Head of School, Rural, School of Clinical Medicine and has several academic reports at the identified campus.

Some key skills required:

  • A BMedMD or MBBS, and Fellowship of a Specialist Medical College (including but not limited to ACEM, ACRRM, RACP, RACGP, RANZCOG, RACS), and currency of medical registration in New South Wales.
  • Demonstrated experience in a particular field of medicine and a commitment to high quality rurally focussed teaching.
  • Support and mentor local undergraduate students, interns, JMO’s and advanced trainees in the region providing insight into potential training opportunities, initiatives and pathways.
  • With Phase Coordinators and Discipline Leads, identify local teaching requirements and build capability through the recruitment and development of appropriately qualified academic and conjoint appointees.
  • A record of successful interaction with Local Health District, Specialist Colleges, professional and training organisations, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills.
