UNSW Department of Anatomy is based within the School of Biomedical Sciences and it is internationally recognised for its teaching and research excellence in neuroscience, biomechanics, anatomical sciences education, multi-disciplinary imaging and digital technologies.
Why this role matters
We’re seeking a passionate educator to join UNSW as a Lecturer in Anatomy (Education Focused). In this role, you’ll contribute to dynamic undergraduate teaching within the discipline of Anatomy and collaboratively with other disciplines in the School of Biomedical Sciences, delivering lectures, tutorials, and practical classes that inspire student learning. You’ll design innovative learning activities and assessments, experiment with new teaching approaches, and provide meaningful support to students both individually and as a cohort. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of biomedical education and development of innovative approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics.
UNSW’s Education Focused roles (EF) enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students. Those who are appointed to this position will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities. The role of Lecturer EF reports to the Head of Anatomy and has no direct reports.
Accountabilities
Some specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Contribute to undergraduate teaching within the discipline of Anatomy and collaboratively with other disciplines in the School of Biomedical Sciences.
- Teaching activities include, but not limited to, the preparation, execution and evaluation of lectures, tutorials, and practical classes, and facilitation of small group learning sessions.
- Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
- Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements, and support students in undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
- Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
- Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics.
- Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
- Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance.
- Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge, and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where relevant)
- Make a positive contribution to School meetings and seminars and be a member of School/Faculty committees as required.
Who you are
(Skills and Experience)
To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.
- A PhD in anatomical sciences, and/or a medical degree with relevant professional expertise.
- Demonstrated experience in effective biomedical teaching including, development, delivery, and course convening, at an undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence.
- Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
- Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
