The MDM and Data Solution Architect role is responsible for designing and delivering enterprise-standard Data and MDM solutions for various business or technology domains within UNSW IT to support university's academic, research, and administrative goals. This position will lead the strategic thinking, design, implementation, and optimisation of the University’s data and MDM architecture, working closely with senior stakeholders, business units, and technical teams to define data standards, architect scalable solutions, and integrate diverse data sources across onpremises and cloud environments. The position will report to the Head of Integration Technologies, has no direct reports and is responsible for the delivery of new data solutions, management of existing solutions and the data platform. The position will have direct reports.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Develop data strategies and end-to-end architectures to facilitate seamless connections within enterprise environments, including multi-cloud environments.
- Design, implement, and manage Data solutions across multi-cloud environments, considering scalability, performance, security and governance.
- Define and enforce Data Storage, Management and Access patterns, standards, methodologies and best practices.
- Design modern Data solutions and capabilities such as Cloud Data Lakehouse Platforms, Master Data Management (MDM) & Data Fabric Solutions, Data Virtualization & Federated Query Engines and AI-Driven Data Governance & Observability Platforms.
- Lead and mentor development teams in the design and implementation of Data solutions, ensuring adherence to architectural principles.
- Engage with stakeholders to translate data requirements and gain buy-in for robust target states and alignment with overall roadmaps.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation for Data architectures, designs, and implementations, including diagrams and technical specifications.
- Continuously evaluate and optimize existing Data solutions to improve efficiency, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
- Work closely with other enterprise architects, solution architects, and technical teams to ensure cohesive and integrated architecture across the organization
- Clearly articulate data strategies, designs, and benefits to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Stay updated on industry trends and best practices related to contemporary data management styles.
- Assist in project planning, estimation, and resource allocation for Data projects.
- Lead and execute the Architectural & Security governance processes for new solution designs related to Data (such as Architecture Working Group, Architecture Review Board, Cybersecurity Assessment)
Skills and Experience:
- Tertiary qualifications in IT or related discipline together with 10+ years’ experience in software development using Cloud architectures and Data components.
- Extensive experience designing and implementing data solutions using capabilities like AWS, SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake , ETL pipelines (Informatica) as well as Azure data platform (Data Factory, SQL, Synapse, Data Lake, Databricks)
- Experience defining and managing a Data design practice including data management patterns, register, and system Data landscape diagrams.
- Demonstrated experience with different types of data hubs and modern data platforms.
- Experience in defining and implementing data governance across large organizations.
- Experience with defining and implementing master data and reference data management solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in defining and implementing data quality standards, processes and tools.
- Comprehensive analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organization.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
