This role sits within our Legal & Compliance team who provide trusted advice on all legal matters affecting the University and upholds the University’s Legislative Compliance Framework

Why Your Role Matters: 
This critical role supports UNSW’s strategic initiative to build on our reputation as a world-leading university, expanding our transnational education offerings in key regions globally. Partnering with local institutions, governments and industry around the world, you will support the successful and compliant delivery of award programs and lifelong learning courses.

As Legal Counsel for the transnational education (TNE) portfolio, you will be providing commercially astute and trusted legal support for TNE activities of the University. This includes working across the establishment and support of joint ventures and alliances, drafting various global agreements and overseeing education services regulation.

 

Developing key partnering relationships with key stakeholders, including senior leadership, external counsel, and technology vendors, you will bring your experience across commercial and contractual law to ensure constructive and timely progression of TNE legal milestones, working alongside the Legal leadership team, Program Manager, and multidisciplinary project team.

 

This position is part of the UNSW Legal & Compliance team, reporting to the Head of Major Research Initiatives, IT & Philanthropy Law to support the progress of global education initiatives and other UNSW ventures.

 

Who you are: 
You will hold a tertiary qualification in a law and have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience specialising contract law and commercial transactions and the confidence to act autonomously as trusted advisor on legal matters in this area.

  • Admission to the Supreme Court of NSW and current practicing certificate. 
  • Significant experience in contract law and commercial transactions.
    Cross border M&A and corporate law experience is also highly regarded.
  • Advanced drafting and negotiation skills and proven capacity to think laterally and exercise initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and complex matters proactively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to negotiate and influence senior stakeholders (including regulators). 
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to act proactively in respect of legal practice. 
  • Strong business acumen and capability deliver high level Legal support required in the achievement of business objectives.
  • Ability to apply judgement, creativity and flexibility to generate new and innovative ideas and approaches and to solve complex problems in a legally compliant manner.
