Why your role matters

The Culture and Wellbeing Senior Coordinator plays a vital role within the Indigenous Student Success team at the Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs. This position delivers programs and initiatives that enrich the Indigenous student experience at UNSW, fostering wellbeing, cultural affirmation, and a strong sense of community and belonging.

The role leads a comprehensive culture and wellbeing program that complements holistic student success initiatives and aligns with the vision of Nura Gili and the University’s Indigenous Student Success Plan. The position reports to the Deputy Director, Nura Gili, and has no direct reports.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Contribute to a positive and dynamic Nura Gili community, informed by culturally affirming values, experiences and shared aspirations.
  • With a focus on Indigenous culture and student wellbeing, develop and monitor year-round programs that include cultural practice workshops, on country experiences, family history workshops and initiatives that contribute to the Nura Gili Student Succes cultural wellbeing objectives. Coordinate and oversee the Elders in Residence Program.
  • Design, implement and oversee a culturally responsive wellbeing program for Indigenous students incorporating initiatives that support stress reduction, physical activity, nutrition awareness, food accessibility, and opportunities for social connection and community engagement.
  • Identify and build strong, respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities and key Indigenous stakeholders particularly aligned to the locations of UNSW to support program development and delivery.

About You:    

  • This position is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants only. UNSW has obtained an exemption under section 126 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW) to designate and recruit professional and academic positions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons only, to fulfil UNSW’s goal of a representative workforce rate. Confirmation of Aboriginality will be required.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing Indigenous programs and opportunities that result in positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
  • Excellent project/program management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislation and policies, and broader university opportunities that apply to Indigenous students in the higher education sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to create positive, vibrant and respectful relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office and CRMs. Project management software experience beneficial.

Pre-employment checks including a NSW Working with Children’s Check are required for this position.
