About UNSW

At UNSW, we pride ourselves on being a workplace where the best people come to do their best work.  We aspire to be Australia’s global university, improving and transforming lives through excellence in research, outstanding education and a commitment to advancing a just society.

Why your role matters

AGSM Executive Education equips leaders with the skills and mindset to succeed in a dynamic global environment. Developed with industry, government, and community partners, its programs address real organisational challenges and future capability needs. Delivered across Australia and online, AGSM offers world-class short courses, customised programs, and capability solutions that help leaders navigate complexity, drive innovation, and achieve lasting impact.

The Business Development Manager drives AGSM’s revenue growth by proactively identifying, engaging, and securing new clients within the Custom Learning Solutions space. This role is focused on business generation — building networks, developing leads, shaping tailored proposals, and converting opportunities into partnerships — before transitioning delivery to the account management team. It requires a commercially astute, relationship-led professional who can confidently engage senior decision-makers across corporate and government sectors and position AGSM as a trusted learning partner.

The position reports to the Head of Learning Solutions and has no direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively research and engage target markets to identify, qualify, and convert new business opportunities, driving revenue growth across priority sectors.
  • Lead the full sales cycle — from prospecting and lead generation through proposal development, negotiation, and contract closure - before transitioning accounts to delivery teams.
  • Develop and implement sector business plans informed by market trends, client insights, and data analysis to achieve and exceed sales targets.
  • Build and maintain strong, strategic relationships with senior decision-makers, positioning AGSM as a trusted learning partner and advisor.
  • Collaborate with marketing to design and execute outreach campaigns, attend key industry events, and elevate AGSM’s visibility across target markets.
  • Identify and pursue upselling and cross-selling opportunities, aligning AGSM’s broader portfolio with client needs and emerging business challenges.
  • Prepare compelling proposals and tenders, ensuring solutions are presented as integrated, high-value capability pathways.
  • Provide accurate forecasts, reporting, and performance insights through CRM and C-View systems, contributing to data-driven business decisions.

Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification (preferably MBA) or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with 3–5 years’ experience in client relationship management, business development, or consultative B2B sales — ideally in an education or professional services setting.
  • Proven success in new business development, with a strong track record of building and managing sales pipelines, generating leads, and closing deals with senior executives to exceed growth targets.
  • Understanding of conceptual offerings in executive and short-course education, with the ability to translate organisational needs into tailored solutions.
  • Strong negotiation, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills, with demonstrated ability to secure desirable outcomes in complex environments.
  • High-level interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across a wide stakeholder base including clients, academics, practitioners, and consultants.
  • Demonstrated account management capability, including experience in preparing budgets, managing client financial reporting, and delivering against agreed outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment, fostering collaboration and innovation.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to balance competing priorities and meet deadlines.
