Why your role matters

The Senior Manager, Security Operations (Canberra) plays a key role in overseeing all security and emergency management functions for UNSW Canberra City and other local spaces. This includes managing incident response, contractor oversight, crime prevention, risk assessments, and operational planning for events, parking, and traffic management. The role also involves providing security advice, ensuring safety and compliance, and engaging with stakeholders.

Working closely with the Senior Facilities Manager, the position contributes to creating a campus environment where the community feels safe and secure. The Senior Manager ensures adherence to relevant laws, policies, and procedures, offering leadership and expert advice. Reporting to the Head of Operations (Kensington) with a dotted line to the Canberra City Campus General Manager and the Faculty Estate, Security & Safety Manager, this role has no direct reports.

About the Role

You will be required to undertake and have experience in the following areas of expertise:

  • Manage contracted security services to ensure services are delivered as per contract requirements, including but not limited to the management of operating procedures, staff management and training, development of staff rosters, monitoring of KPIs, complaints management and conducting safety audits.
  • Provide strategic advice to Head of Operations on security and emergency arrangements for all Canberra locations to enhance the security posture.
  • Provide advice and leadership to campus community as the escalation point for security and emergency operational matters.
  • Develop strong stakeholder relationships with internal key stakeholders including UNSW Canberra leadership team, Senior FM, onsite partners (e.g. Launch) and the UNSW National Security Team. Establish relationships with external agencies such as AFP, ASIO and Department of Defence.
  • Develop and deliver regular security and safety awareness communications for the Canberra City campus.
  • Manage the process for issuing of access credentials (card or mobile) for students, staff, onsite partners and contractors via the Gallagher system.
  • Undertake risk assessments, develop operational plans, and planning meetings to support events, VIP visits, and scheduled activities that may impact campus operations. Requirement to attend and lead security operations for high-risk events to ensure they run smoothly.
  • Ensure emergency management compliance is met as per standard AS 3745 Planning for Emergencies including running emergency exercises, establishing Emergency Control Organisations and meeting training requirements.
  • Proactively develop and deliver emergency management awareness programs to the UNSW Canberra City campus.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop crime prevention initiatives in response to incident trends and raise awareness to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.
  • Develop Security Operations Procedures (SOPS) and contribute to the development of other unit policies and procedures.
  • Manage the parking operations and security systems to ensure they are operating effectively supported by Protective Services teams at Kensington.

About You

  • A tertiary degree in security, risk or emergency management and extensive experience working in Security Operations within a large complex organisation.
  • Must hold a 1A/2A ACT Security Licence and meet AGSVA eligibility requirements for baseline clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering projects as part of a working group.
  • Experience in Defence industry and/or partnering with defence and law enforcement stakeholders is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously as well as contractor management experience for existing security teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Ability to work under pressure with a high level of organisational skills to manage changing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously to identify, analyse and solve complex problems whilst demonstrating strong initiative, the ability to remain composed during high pressure situations, and a proactive approach for process improvement.
  • Excellent consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
