About the role
In this role, you will contribute to the efficient and effective operation of Council’s processes and responsibilities for fire hazard identification and compliance with Council’s Local Law, Country Fire Authority (CFA) Act 1958 and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) Act 1958.

Work type: Fixed Term (3 months) – Full Time
Classification: Band 5 Commencing at $40.99 per hour

Key responsibilities include:

  • Community Engagement & Compliance: Liaise with the public regarding fire prevention, respond to complaints and enquiries, and promote compliance with relevant legislation, local laws, and council policies.
  • Fire Hazard Inspections & Enforcement: Conduct annual fire hazard inspections, oversee seasonal staff, issue notices, and prepare documentation for legal proceedings if necessary.
  • Planning & Reporting: Support the planning and review of the Municipal Fire Management Plan and Victorian Fire Risk Register and contribute to seasonal planning and end-of-season evaluations.
  • Training & Support: Assist with the induction and mentoring of seasonal employees and help develop efficient record-keeping systems using council software.
  • Administrative & Legal Duties: Write reports, maintain accurate records, represent the City in court when required, and make decisions on fire prevention notices and compliance actions.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have strong communication skills with the ability to liaise with members of the community in relation to problem solving and negotiation. You must be able to work within a small but highly motivated team and enjoy putting ideas and suggestions across in line with our Better Ways of Working.

Essential Experience:

  • Completion of the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer Course an advantage but not essential.
  • Completion of Maintain Safety at Fire Incident training an advantage but not essential.
  • A current Victorian Driver's Licence and Working with Children’s Check

You will gain knowledge of Fire Management Planning and experience in emergency management.
