About the role
As a Health & Amenity Officer you will proactively patrol the City of Greater Geelong municipality liaising with the public to resolve complaints and/or disputes.

You will work closely with the Health & Amenity Team and address local laws breaches as well as work on a range of local laws investigations. Some issues addressed may include littering, unsightly properties, overhanging vegetation, dumped rubbish, noise complaints and camping on council land.

  • Establish positive communications with the general public to educate and positively promote the need for compliance with the various statutes, legislation and local laws
  • Assist with the administration of the provisions of all applicable legislation, Acts, Regulations and Local Laws to ensure compliance
  • Providing assistance to investigate complaints received in relation to the nuisance provisions of the Public Health and Wellbeing Act
  • Support the preparation of relevant documentation for legal proceedings as directed in relation to breaches within the area of responsibility
  • Provide support to access and process relevant Local Law provisions as they relate to health and amenity matters including camping, littering, noise, footpath trading and more

About you
To be successful in this role, you will require previous experience in a Local Laws Officer role, or a role that requires a strong knowledge or understanding of relevant legislation, acts and regulations. You must be a motivated, team-oriented and have the confidence to be able to communicate with the general public. The ideal candidate will be proactive, people focused and innovative with a willingness to learn.

  • Ability to apply legislation and explain the application to staff members, the public and, when necessary, the Courts.
  • Communicate positively and to conduct investigations of potential breaches of legislation in relation to Nuisances under the Public Health & Wellbeing Act, and other relevant legislation.
  • Ability to interpret, apply and clearly explain decisions to both the public and other Council staff.
  • Qualification/experience in a statutory compliance role or other tertiary related field.
  • Candidates with a Certificate IV – Local Government & Regulations are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Preferred candidates will require a Working with Childrens Check and be required to undergo a National Police Check, and a pre-employment medical assessment as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
