The Department of Biology at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for the Masters of Biotechnology program to teach BIOT 680: Semester-in-on Wednesday, from 5:30-8:15 p.m. every other week, in person. The dates of this course are 6/5, 6/19, 7/3, 7/17, and 7/31/2024

Course Description

Provides the student with tools and a focused pathway to develop and complete their Semester in Residence Project. This process is imperative to the student's ability to produce a comprehensive final project, defense, and future industry presentations. 

Minimum qualifications:

  • A master's degree and experience teaching, or equivalent practical experience in Writing
  • Communication and Presentation Skills
  • Course Design (can design a well-structured syllabus, select appropriate course materials, and can incorporate fundamental tools and techniques used to study protein structure and function)
  • Continuous Learning and Adaptability (commitment to staying update with latest research techniques and developments).
  • Direct experience in scientific/technical writing. This could include having completed one’s own thesis, dissertation, or Semester-in-Residence project.
  • Knowledge of various research methodologies, techniques, and industry processes and practices relevant to the life sciences. This includes qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as familiarity with academic databases and research ethics.
  • Familiarity with scientific and/or technical writing strategies and conventions. Knowledge of citation standards (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) formatting guidelines, and academic integrity principles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills essential for effectively conveying complex ideas, providing feedback, and fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A doctorate in Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, or Biotechnology, or related field or equivalent and/or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience teaching or mentoring students/employees in topics related to scientific writing or communication.
  • Familiarity with the Semester-in-Residence process including the ability to identify projects, articulate specific aims, and understand the writing structure and format of the proposal, progress reports, and the final report.
  • Experience advising students through the thesis/project writing process, providing constructive feedback, and supporting them in overcoming challenges.
  • Curriculum Development -ability to design and deliver effective instructional materials, develop engaging activities and facilitate discussion to enhance participant’s learning experience.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $2,146 per Weighted Teaching Unit (WTU) 
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $1,049 - $5,795 per Weighted Teaching Unit (WTU)
