The History Department at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Southwest Borderlands History, at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in Fall 2023. Period of specialization is open.  

Located approximately 50 miles north of the US-Mexico border, CSUSM serves students from a diverse range of backgrounds that reflect North County San Diego. CSUSM is a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, and Hispanic/Latina/o/x students make up approximately half of the student body (48%).  More American Indian students attend CSUSM per capita than any other CSU campus. Over 50% of CSUSM graduates are the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree, and many work full-or part-time while taking classes. Considering CSUSM's student demographics, support for and commitment to student success is essential for this position, as is a record of commitment to diversity and inclusion in teaching, research, and/or service. 

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Ph.D. in the discipline of History. Degree must be in hand at time of appointment 

  • Expertise in Southwest Borderlands History 

  • Ability to teach lower-division surveys in US and/or World History, upper-division and graduate courses in Southwest Borderlands, as well as related courses in US and/or Latin American history  

  • Experience and commitment to teaching and student mentorship, including undergraduate and graduate students 

  • Record of, or demonstrated potential for, working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSUSM student body  

  • An active research agenda with a record of, or demonstrated potential for, publication 

  • Willingness to contribute to department and university service   

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Ability to teach about both sides of the US-Mexico border 

  • A subfield in any of the following areas: environmental history, ethnohistory, gender history, public history, race and ethnicity  

  • Interest in community engagement 

  • Experience or interest in working with Digital History 

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $6,751 - $7,167 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,405 - $11,994 per month
