Overview:

Provide primary prevention programming as it relates to child maltreatment, domestic violence, teen dating violence and sexual assault, facilitating youth and adult leadership community mobilization in schools and community presentations.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Director - Prevention and Outreach Services, Program Manager - Prevention and Outreach Services, Coordinator - Prevention and Outreach Services, the Prevention Education and Outreach Specialist will:  Youth Leadership – Facilitates youth leadership community mobilization comprising of; recruiting youth for the team, be the liaisons with community based organizations to ensure success of the group, participates in evaluation and technical assistance activities, conducts focus groups, delivers primary prevention and awareness presentations, oversees prevention volunteers. Work with the funder, the California Department of Public Health, to comply with reporting and evaluation of the program.  Develop- Create program resources, including educational materials and recruitment/marketing materials, as directed by supervisor. Community Education and Outreach - Participates in community events, health, safety, and resource fairs and coordinates coverage when unable to attend. Recruitment - Assists in recruitment and selection of volunteers for SU internships and prevention education advocate role, participates in training of advocates.  Data Collection and Documentation – Completes required reports for funders, responsible for meeting grant milestones. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Two years of volunteer or work experience in community organizing or in a social service setting is preferred. Experience with the Close to Home model a plus. Equivalent of one year of public speaking experience and an awareness of the impact of interpersonal violence on individuals, families, and society required. Must speak Spanish.

 

Knowledge, Specialized Skills, and Abilities                                                                                                                                                                                                              

Working knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of community education and advocacy issues related to the treatment of victims of crime in California, and especially in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. Ability and specialized skills to motivate and teach others, lead discussions, and generate new ideas; speak and write effectively; write narrative and statistical reports; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; work comfortably with multimedia materials; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals and organizations; and relate well with a broad spectrum of persons of varying socioeconomic status, culture, ethnicity, and lifestyle. Computer and organizational skills necessary. Must demonstrate an acceptance and respect for cultural diversity in all its forms, including ethnicity, sexual orientation, abilities, and religious backgrounds and an ability to work collaboratively in an ethnically linguistically, and culturally diverse environment.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment 

Work is performed in an office setting with a low-to-moderate noise level; employee will need to utilize their personal vehicle for travel to and from meetings outside the office; employee must regularly communicate by telephone, written communications and in-person with staff, families served, partners, funders and other professionals; occasionally lift, carry and position objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
