The Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure‐track Assistant Professor position in Sound Design with an appointment to begin Fall 2025.

Position
The CSUF Department of Theatre and Dance is seeking a dynamic new colleague who is a committed artist-educator and active sound designer who understands the impact of artistic and cultural biases in design and education; one who will share their professional experience and their sense of creative discovery with graduate and undergraduate students both in the classroom and through production-based educational experiences. 

The qualified candidate could teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses in Sound Design, Technical Production, and other areas of expertise.  Courses include, but are not limited to: Audio Techniques, Advanced Sound Design, and Graduate Sound Seminar. They will be responsible for mentoring graduate and undergraduate student designers on departmental productions while maintaining currency with emerging developments in sound and audio technologies. The candidate could also design mainstage and developmental productions as part of their teaching load.  The candidate shall work closely with the staff audio technician.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other departmental personnel to contribute to Department curriculum, policy, and practice and to pursue scholarly/creative and service activities outside of the academy.

Required Qualifications

  • MFA or related terminal degree by the time of appointment.
  • Previous teaching experience in higher education.
  • A robust and continuing artistic practice in sound design, which may include regional and/or national productions as a sound designer.
  • Ability to design sound systems for plays and musicals.
  • Experience with sound design for musical theater, including live mixing and management, and troubleshooting of wireless microphones.
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, equity, inclusion and belonging, showing the ability to interact effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to tune sound systems in a range of different theatrical venues.
  • Knowledge of musical composition and some experience in composing for live entertainment.

The Department
The Department of Theatre & Dance serves approximately 450 Majors, with 27 Full-time and 28 Part-time Faculty and 14 Full-time Professional Staff in all requisite areas of design and production, and offers BA, BFA Degrees, and MFA Degrees in Directing and Design & Technical Production. The yearly season consists of up to 8 main stage, up to 8 studio series productions, and many student showcases (performed, designed, and staffed by students) including plays, musicals, dance, devised/physical theatre, and opera, produced in the modernized Clayes Performing Arts Center, which houses multiple state-of-the-art playing spaces. The Department of Theatre and Dance is fully accredited by NAST (National Association of Schools of Theater), NASD (National Association of Schools of Dance) and is a member of URTA (University Resident Theater Association) and USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology).  For more information about the department, please visit: http://www.fullerton.edu/arts/theatredance/   

Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $7,142 to $7,282 per month.

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).  

Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
