Job Summary

The Equipment Technician II will work under the general supervision of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department Chairperson, faculty assigned by the MAE Department Chairperson and in close coordinator with other MAE Equipment Technicians. The person is responsible for assigned equipment design, fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, and upgrade of assigned equipment used in MAE course instruction or research activities. The person will also be involved in construction of unique, highly technical and prototype equipment or systems needed for instruction and/or research as assigned by the MAE Department Chairperson.

Key Responsibilities

  • Machine shop operations: Under the direction of the Department Chair, this technician will maintain equipment as defined in equipment manual
  • maintenance schedules.
  • Machine shop and laboratory maintenance
  • Special Projects and Masters' Theses Assistance: Assist with supervising students involved in machining project designs. Instruct students in proper and safe use of equipment and machinery.
  • Order equipment, parts and supplies to maintain labs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to operate all machine shop equipment and assist in the design and construction of research equipment and classroom experimental apparatus. Ability to provide assistance to faculty and students for their class projects, including instruction on proper use of equipment, tools, and lab safety. Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of equipment in the area of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; knowledge of equipment design theory; knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting and overhaul of equipment. Knowledge of computer aided drafting and solid modeling systems, e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, PRO-ENGINEER, or I-DEAS, to be able to assist students in building their projects.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to two years of journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical mechanical equipment requiring construction and fabrication skills, some precision work, and trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials, or specialized knowledge and skill related to unusual equipment required.

Physical Summary

Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,422 - $7,998 per month.

1.0  time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
