POSITION PURPOSE: The Student Life Coordinator, under general direction of the Dean of the Antelope Valley (AV) Campus, leads and directs strategic initiatives that enhance student engagement, governance, and success at the AV campus. This position serves as the primary advisor and advocate for student governance bodies, oversees the development and implementation of innovative campus-wide programs, and fosters a vibrant and inclusive student experience aligned with institutional priorities. The incumbent collaborates with university leadership, faculty, and external stakeholders to address complex, cross-campus issues and develops policies, frameworks, and initiatives that have a transformative impact on the student community. With responsibility for administering large-scale budgets, ensuring compliance with institutional policies, and advancing student well-being, this role demands advanced analytical, interpersonal, and leadership skills to shape the future of student services at the AV campus and beyond.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead & Oversee Strategic Student Engagement Initiatives

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for student engagement at the AV campus that aligns with institutional goals and enhances student success across all demographics.
  • Lead the planning and execution of large-scale campus-wide events such as welcome week, homecoming, and commencement, ensuring their alignment with institutional priorities and student development frameworks.
  • Oversee all aspects of event planning, including negotiating with high-level external vendors and managing cross-departmental collaborations to ensure effective execution.
  • Coordinate with Antelope Valley College (AVC) to ensure events are following university and college health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all campus protocols are followed and that events are safe, fun, and contribute to student development and wellbeing.
  • Create and implement innovative programs and services that promote student retention, well-being, and leadership development.
  • Lead and provide guidance to Graduate Student Leaders and student assistants as assigned to AV, ensuring their professional development and alignment with campus priorities. 
  • Hire and lead student assistant for student life programming.
  • Serve as a primary advisor to campus leadership on student engagement trends, challenges, and opportunities, shaping policies to address identified needs.

Oversee AV Students Clubs, ASI, & Other Student Governance

  • Act as the principal advisor to all AV campus student government bodies, including Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) and Student Leadership Advisory Council (SLAC), ensuring alignment with university policies and strategic goals.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and policy guidance to ASI and other student governance groups, enabling them to make informed decisions that impact the student body.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of new governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to enhance transparency, accountability, and student engagement in campus decision-making processes.
  • Serve as the campus AV representative in high-level discussions regarding student governance and serve as a mediator in resolving conflicts among student organizations.

Collaborate on Campus-Wide Initiatives & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent the AV campus in university-wide committees and initiatives related to student life, governance, and fee structures, advocating for the needs and priorities of AV students.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with university leadership, faculty, community stakeholders, and external organizations to enhance the quality and scope of student services.
  • Coordinate with Student Affairs on all campus wide initiatives.  Serve on commencement, homecoming, and other student facing event planning. 

Budgeting & Reporting

  • In coordination with the Dean, administer and oversee complex budgets for ASI, student fees, and other funding sources, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with strategic goals. Work with Budget Analyst to ensure budget balances and appropriate spending.  Advise student government on spending priorities.
  • Develop and implement campus-wide policies and guidelines for student activities, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and institutional standards.
  • In coordination with the Dean, prepare in-depth reports and presentations for university executives, demonstrating the impact of student life initiatives on institutional goals and student success.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

LICENSES – Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. 
  • General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management.
  • General knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Ability to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations.
  • Ability to analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
  • Ability to understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters or Doctoral degree with an emphasis in higher education.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK – involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Drives motorized equipment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
