Position Description

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Nurse Practitioner

UNION CODE: R02

TEMPORARY END DATE: This position is temporary and ends on or before June 30, 2026. Any continuation beyond June 30, 2026 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

FT/PT: Full-time   

PAY PLAN: This is a 10/12 pay-plan designated position. Employees appointed on this 10/12 pay-plan position work 10 months of the year and receive the months of July and December off. Employees are paid an amount equal to 10 months’ salary over a period of twelve months.

If the position begins after June 1, 2025, this position will be on the 12 month pay-plan at the rate indicated through December 2025 and will then convert to the 10/12 pay-plan January 2026. Then, the first full months off will then be July and December 2026.

ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $9,500 - $10,033

  • However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate’s experience, education, skills, and training.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $6,153 - $11,873

POSITION PURPOSE: The mission of the Student Health Services is to build a healthy campus community by providing quality, caring, cost effective ambulatory healthcare and health promotion services. As part of an institution of higher learning, the Student Health Services participates in the educational process by teaching students the skills for self-care, promoting their health, advocating for themselves, and preventing diseases thus enhancing their academic productivity leading to a satisfying college experience. Services provided by CSU student health centers include, but are not limited to, primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and sexual health education and support including provision of medication abortion services.

Under the supervision of the Director of Student Health Services, using established standardized procedures and/or processes, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide reproductive care and patient care which includes assessment, diagnosis, and preventative and health maintenance. The NP will provide services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties

  • Work and collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary health care team that includes primary care physicians, nurses, medical assistants, clinical assistants, and other support staff.
  • Collaborate and consult with physicians and other health care professionals on more complicated health problems and referrals.
  • Work primarily providing reproductive health to the college population to include:
    1. Obtain a basic health history and comprehensive gynecological (GYN) history.
    2. Perform a general physical exam, breast exam, GYN exam, and male genitourinary exam.
    3. Recognize common breast and GYN deviations from normal and provide management or referral as appropriate.
    4. Recognize common non-GYN deviations from normal and provide management or referral as appropriate.
    5. Provide preventive care, including screening for breast and cervical cancers.
    6. Provide family planning education.
    7. Obtain and interpret laboratory tests and results related to GYN visits.
    8. Perform and interpret transvaginal and abdominal ultrasounds.
    9. Screen for contraindications and special conditions to contraceptive methods.
    10. Provide appropriate contraception to patients, including intrauterine contraceptives (IUCs) and implants.
    11. Placement and removal of long-acting reversible contraception and on-site delivery and prescribing of emergency contraception.
    12. Test and treat STDs and other infectious conditions.
    13. Provide PrEP and nPEP to prevent HIV infection.
    14. Provide sexual health education, counseling and care, including administration of medication abortion services.
    15. Assess and manage complications from medication abortion.
    16. Provide care for patients of all gender identities, including gender-affirming care.
    17. Construct an accurate assessment and plan based on history, exam, and lab findings.
  • Coordinate on-site implementation of SB 24 legally mandated medical abortion services.
  • Perform complete and focused patient evaluations, including obtaining detailed medical histories and physicals, using applicable clinical techniques and diagnostic tools.
  • Provide family planning, preventive health, and health maintenance education.
  • Perform patient assessment and triage.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding health problems, family planning, emotional problems, acute mental health problems, preventative healthcare, and health care maintenance.
  • Perform, as privileged, other procedures after obtaining patient consent such as injections, immunizations, suturing lacerations, skin biopsies, incisions and drainage and wound care.
  • Diagnose common acute and chronic illnesses and injuries and develop treatment plans based upon a complete evaluation of a patient’s medical history, physical examination, and test results as well as a patient’s preferences.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate routine lab tests and other diagnostic tests and procedures including x-ray examinations.
  • Analyze emergency situations accurately and to take prompt appropriate action including the initiation of therapeutic procedures in response to life threatening situations.
  • Establish, diagnose, and document health care plans, disposition, referrals, and prognosis in the Electronic Medical Record (EHR) using subjective, objective, assessment, and plan (SOAP) format, problem lists and medication lists.
  • Document each patient encounter in a manner that will enable other providers or peer reviewing group to evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency and appropriateness of the plan.
  • Establish and document the health care treatment plans and prognoses for patients treated and refer to outside health care provider(s) or public agencies when patients require services beyond those available in the Student Health Center.
  • Use equipment in SHS clinics and urgent care including, EKG, Spirometer, Defibrillator and Nebulizer.
  • Furnish medications to patients according to supervising physician’s protocols and Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations.
  • Furnish medication to patients; educate patients regarding medication instructions, potential side effects and adverse reactions and the risks of noncompliance with the therapeutic regimen. Document this discussion in the SOAP/progress note.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding use of medications and seek patient and provider concordance for prescribed therapeutic regimens.
  • Closely monitor all use of controlled substances prescribed as treatment, registering, and using the California Controlled Substances Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) when indicated and/or required by law.
  • Accommodate anticipated and urgent unanticipated patient needs in your daily schedule.
  • Adhere to all HIPAA & FERPA guidelines and maintain strict patient confidentiality, as required by law.
  • Work independently according to guidelines and practices described in SHS physician-approved protocols.

Administrative Duties

AAAHC Accreditation Assistance

  • Responsible for credentialing of all SHS providers (MD, NP, RN, RD, AT) to ensure all credentials (licenses and certifications) are up to date utilizing the National Practitioner Data Base to determine if any actions (lawsuits, malpractice, suspension of license) have occurred.
  • Responsible for conducting all 4 annual chart audits.
  • Responsible for quarterly Peer review studies and reports for each provider.
  • Assist Director with QMIC studies and reports.
  • Provide annual report to Director with recommendation regarding privileging.
  • Perform annual review of all medical policies and make recommendations for changes.

Clinical Shadowing Program Coordination

  • Ensure each student meets the requirements of 100 hours of shadowing.
  • Assist with the application review process.
  • Assist with the development of the educational materials (workshops, case studies, homework).
  • Assist with the scheduling of students for clinical shadowing in the exam rooms.
  • Provide documentation validating the hours completed for each student.

Provider Outreach Coordination

  • Coordinate with Health Education Coordinator to plan provider outreaches across campus to include things such as blood pressure checks and lab screenings.
  • Coordinate all requests for provider presentations.
  • Coordinate flu clinics in high-risk areas.
  • Coordinate monthly provider workshop.

Serve as the SHS provider liaison on committees and in meetings to include:

  • CO SB 24 provider meetings
  • CO Chaperone meetings
  • CO Gender-Affirming Care group

Serve as back-up PNC Administration

  • Assist with the oversight of the maintenance of the Electronic Medical Record system by ensuring confidentiality of information in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA requirements.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and implement emergency response plans to address health crises and public health emergencies.
  • Serve as Back-up Medical Lead for the CSUB EOC.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE –

  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible professional nurse practitioner experience with demonstrated capability to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
  • Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

LICENSES –

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate.
  • Possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –

  • Regular attendance required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices, and protocols relative to the scope of practice, subject areas such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance, applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Possesses the abilities and clinical competence required to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, the ability to work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals.
  • Ability to use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools and interpret laboratory and other test results.
  • Ability to keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent’s scope of practice.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five (5) years of experience in reproductive health care.
  • Nurse Practitioner Independent Practice Group Setting Certification (103 NP).
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: MEDIUM WORK – up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

SCREENING: Only those applicants possessing experience most directly related to the immediate needs of the office will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board for the purpose of appraising training, experience, and interest in the position.
