The Department of Mathematics at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time Graduate Assistant for Fall.
Purpose of Position: To assist faculty with various professional and technical duties supporting research within the Department of Mathematics.
Under immediate supervision, the Graduate Assistant assists a regular faculty member or the teaching staff with various professional and technical duties associated generally with the subjects or programs in which the assistant is doing graduate work. This work should not take precedence over the successful completion of the graduate degree program by the student in a timely manner.
List of Duties
Assist faculty with professional and non-teaching duties
Provide technical assistance to faculty member
Assist faculty in evaluating students work and examinations
Assist faculty with research and preparation of course materials
Assist faculty in the classroom, workshop or laboratory
Assist students in the classroom, workshop or laboratory
Supervise workshop or laboratory periods
Train students in the use of equipment or other resources
Assist in the instruction of students
Conduct small discussion groups
Perform demonstrations
Assist students with course materials or contents
The assignment will be 6 hours per week. The office hour(s) will be scheduled centrally, typically on Fridays, to minimize conflicts and promote student participation. The specific breakdown of duties each week will be determined by the course instructor.
For Fall 2026, the Department of Mathematics will potentially be hiring a Graduate Assistant in each of the following upper division mathematics courses:
MATH 330, Introduction to Math History
MATH 342, Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Physicists
MATH 346, Math Methods for Engineering and Physics
MATH 350, Foundations for Theoretical Mathematics
MATH 362, Differential Equations
MATH 378, Number Systems
MATH 424, Introduction to Cryptography
MATH 430, Foundations of Analysis
MATH 441, Introduction to Probability
MATH 448, Math Models and Methods
MATH 465, Intro to Numerical Linear Algebra
MATH 470, Introduction to Abstract Algebra
MATH 472, Introduction to Graph Theory
General Minimum Qualifications of the Position:
Registration in a CSU graduate degree program
Equivalent to the completion of the requirements for a bachelor's degree
Enrolled in courses at CSUSM toward the completion of the graduate degree during the appointment period
Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline in which assigned
Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment
Ability to supervise, assist and train students
Ability to assist faculty in the conduct of special projects/research within the discipline
Must have earned a B+ or better in the course (or its equivalent at another university) for which the student is applying to be hired.
Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.
Anticipated Pay Rate
Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $3,408-$6,072
CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,408-$6,072
The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.

A review of applications will begin on Jume 15, 2026; however, the position will remain open until filled. All positions are subject to enrollment/registration as a CSUSM student and funding.
