JOB SUMMARY:
The Creative Director – Live Entertainment Concepts is a visionary creative leader responsible for shaping the next generation of immersive experiences at Universal Orlando Resort. This role leads the early-phase development of original and IP-based live entertainment—from bold blue-sky ideation to concept development; translating strategic objectives into compelling creative direction and materials for effective hand-off to a project team.
Working at the intersection of narrative design, audience engagement, and technological innovation, the Creative Director defines the creative vision for new projects and ensures alignment with Universal’s brand values and future-facing guest experience strategy. This role collaborates with world-class artists, designers, writers, producers, and technologists to imagine, pitch, and position entertainment that resonates emotionally, delivers operational feasibility, and elevates Universal’s global entertainment portfolio.
As a key creative advocate and thought leader, the Creative Director plays a central role in shaping long-term creative strategies, mentoring internal talent, and influencing the evolution of live entertainment storytelling.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Leads the creation and visioning of large-scale entertainment concepts, storytelling frameworks, thematic direction, and blue-sky ideas that define the creative foundation for future initiatives.
- Authors and refines high-impact creative treatments, vision decks, and concept scripts, translating strategic direction into emotionally resonant, narratively rich deliverables.
- Guides cross-functional collaboration with artists, designers, writers, and experience developers, ensuring all conceptual materials support a unified creative vision and brand expression.
- Drives strategic innovation by partnering with creative and technical teams to explore feasibility, prototype new ideas, and creatively assess emerging technologies that can transform guest experiences.
- Champions the creative vision through presentations to executive leadership, licensors, and stakeholders—securing alignment and positioning projects for greenlight and long-term success.
- Leads alignment with intellectual property stakeholders, ensuring creative integrity and co-developing content that balances brand fidelity with original storytelling.
- Examines trend research and strategic foresight to identify new IP, storytelling platforms, guest behaviors, and media formats that shape Universal’s entertainment roadmap.
- Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's degree in Theater, Art, Film, Architecture, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE:
- 9+ years in art direction, production design, or creative development of immersive entertainment.
- Theme park or live entertainment industry experience strongly preferred.
- Creative development experience-based entertainment for world-class theme parks or related industries; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Expert-level storytelling, narrative development, and visual presentation capabilities.
- Strong ability to lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams through ambiguity and innovation.
- Experience collaborating with licensors and navigating complex brand partnerships.
- Strategic thinker with a high-level understanding of audience trends, engagement models, and the evolving entertainment landscape.
- Extremely confident presenter and creative advocate when pitching to and communicating with Senior Leadership.
- Passion for pioneering new formats of live entertainment that surprise, delight, and immerse.
