JOB SUMMARY:

At Universal Orlando Resort (UOR), our values include making Safety a priority. To support this priority, UOR is seeking an experienced and innovative Senior EHS Specialist to join our team. In this position, you will be responsible for overseeing and supporting environmental, health, and safety operations. This role serves as the primary EHS contact for operations by ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, promoting a safe work environment, conducting risk assessments, and problem solving with internal partners. The ideal candidate is proactive, self-directed, and capable of making sound decisions independently.

In this role, you must demonstrate the ability to build trust and confidence with the cross functional operations teams, and influence change through providing comprehensive risk assessments and safety data analysis. To do so, you must be an effective communicator and send clear, concise and consistent messages, both verbally and in writing.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment:

  • Spotting Hazards: Regularly look for safety risks in changing work environments, especially during active operations.
  • Understanding Causes and Effects: Use knowledge of how people interact with equipment and processes to figure out what could go wrong, how serious it could be, and what can be done to prevent it.
  • Evaluating Risks: Help identify which tasks or areas have the highest safety risks, especially in routine work.
  • Recommending Safety Measures: Suggest and support putting safety controls in place to reduce or eliminate risks.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with operations and safety teams to make sure everyone is on the same page.
  • Documentation: Keep clear and accurate records of findings, recommendations, and safety procedures.

Operations:

  • Support Safety Systems: Support the implementation of and monitor conformance with the EHS Management System, policy and standards.
  • Help Reduce Risks: Observe execution of work against Divisional procedures and work plans for deviations which drive or introduce hazards. Facilitate, monitor, and provide feedback on conformance with plans to reduce hazards and impacts and associated risks, provide day to day proactive and collaborative technical advice and support to assigned business area regarding objectives.
  • Emergency Response: Be ready to respond to emergencies and take part in on-call duties.
  • Partnership: Focus on key EHS matters driving risk and incidents by collaborating and aligning with partners to include appropriate implementation, inspection, training, documentation, while identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Relationships: Build relationships as a “trusted advisor” to influence management teams understanding of regulations, “partner facing” EHS process, and Standards. Provide guidance on EHS performance by understanding the causes of nonconformity, prescribed control effectiveness, and methods to improve EHS standards and processes.

Performance:

  • Controls: Monitor the integrity and effectiveness of controls, with emphasis on critical/high risk controls, to identify actual and potential failures. Coordinate, perform, and document inspection activities to monitor presence and use of controls and evaluate conformance.
  • Analysis: Prepare and use direct reading equipment to perform basic measurements and monitoring of work environment.
  • Incident Investigations: Execute and document incident investigations, as assigned. Evaluate for effectiveness of prescribed controls, training, standards, and other management system elements. Seeking immediate and root cause for corrective action and preventive mitigations. Evaluates incident causes for EHS risk.
  • Response: Actively respond to and participate in the EHS on-call, audit and other EHS process as assigned, continually identify hazards, make observations, and stop work when there is imminent danger.
  • Professionalism: Conform to internal EHS processes, procedures, and the EHS Code of Professionalism. Take action and collaborate with EHS peers, share resources, foster communication, and remain aligned to a single EHS vision and mission with one set of established goals and objectives. Consistently and accurately, document incidents, actions, and nonconformities using the prescribed EHS Applications and processes.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • High school degree / GED or Technical school required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; especially in an EHS discipline; or equivalent EHS experience
  • Certified Safety Professional, CIH or other equivalent certification preferred

EXPERIENCE:

  • 4+ years in EHS
  • Comprehensive knowledge of risk assessments, incident investigation, OSHA 1910/1926 regulations, hazard recognition and mitigation, and incident response
