About UNSW:

UNSW isn't like other places you've worked. Yes, we're a large organisation with a diverse and talented community doing extraordinary things. Together, we are driven to be thoughtful, practical and purposeful in everything we do.

As Australia's #1 university and one of the world's leading research institutions, our people are helping solve society's biggest challenges through world-class research, education and innovation. If you want a career where you can thrive, be challenged and make a genuine impact, you're in the right place.

Why Your Role Matters

As AI reshapes education, you will lead the technical development of scalable platforms and applications that improve teaching, learning and assessment across the Business Faculty. Working with Education Designers, academics, professional teams and external partners, you will turn ideas into practical prototypes and production-ready solutions for large student cohorts. This role reports to the Director, Education Excellence and Innovation, has no direct reports and is not available remotely.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build and deploy full-stack AI-enabled education platforms, applications and digital tools.
  • Develop solutions using Large Language Models, retrieval-augmented generation, conversational AI, agentic workflows and intelligent automation.
  • Lead platform architecture, integrations and technical standards across cloud services, APIs, databases, authentication services and learning systems.
  • Rapidly prototype, test and improve solutions based on user feedback and operational needs.
  • Ensure solutions are secure, accessible, reliable, scalable and maintainable.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to project teams, vendors and development partners.
  • Apply strong software engineering, DevOps, testing, documentation and production support practices.
  • Identify and manage psychosocial and physical health and safety risks within your area of responsibility.

Who you are

You are a technically strong software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems with AI. You are curious, practical and comfortable experimenting, learning from setbacks and improving ideas through testing. Education-sector experience is desirable, not essential.

You will bring:

  • A relevant qualification and experience in software engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, information technology or a related field, or equivalent competence.
  • Strong full-stack development experience using modern programming languages and frameworks.
  • Experience building and deploying AI-enabled applications using LLMs, AI APIs and cloud platforms.
  • Experience with APIs, databases, web services, authentication and third-party integrations.
  • Experience with RAG systems, agentic workflows, conversational AI or intelligent automation.
  • Technical leadership experience across complex software, platform or product initiatives.
  • Experience with version control, testing, CI/CD, monitoring, observability and production support.
  • Strong problem-solving, stakeholder communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
  • A practical understanding of privacy, security, accessibility and ethical AI.
  • Commitment to UNSW’s values, policies and health and safety responsibilities.

Desirable experience includes higher education, learning technologies, digital assessment, learning analytics or vendor coordination.
