The Senior Research Associate (Level B) is expected to carry out independent and/or team research related to equity, diversity, and/or inclusion in STEM and to carry out activities to develop their research expertise relevant to their particular field of research. This role involves conducting research scoped as part of the Future You program. Research activities are primarily to involve systematic review and/or meta-analysis activities, but may also include empirical research evaluating the impact of the program on key audiences. This work is guided by, and will inform refinement of, a Theory of Change that underpins program design and evaluation.
The Future You program aims to shift perceptions about who belongs in STEM education and careers among all students aged 8 – 12 years, their teachers, and their parents and carers via two core objectives: 1: Inspire girls and children from other underrepresented backgrounds and identities to pursue STEM careers by challenging stereotypes and communicating that STEM is for everyone; and 2: Raise awareness of the range of exciting STEM skilled career opportunities available by providing real life examples of people working in STEM careers, and showing the different career pathways students can take.
About the role
- $127k - $150k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term – 18 months
- Part-time (28 hours per week)
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Engage in individual and/or collaborative research in a manner consistent with disciplinary practice.
- Create scholarly impact in the discipline which is recognised by peers in the advancement of disciplinary knowledge.
- Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently or as a member of a team (as per the norms of the discipline).
- Establish a personal research portfolio and start developing independent research proposals.
- Mentor and guide students and colleagues and develop the next generation of academics through involvement in supervision of research trainees (as per the norms of the discipline).
- Design and carry out systematic review and/or meta-analysis of a body of work scoped within the guiding Theory of Change for the Future You program.
- Carry out empirical research evaluating the impact of the Future You program resources.
- Lead reporting of research findings to funders, other stakeholders, and scholarly communities including via research reports, academic manuscripts, and/or oral presentations.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:
- A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
- Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with research relating to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
- A track record of significant involvement with research funded by government, industry, and/or philanthropic partners.
- Demonstrated ability to report research findings in both traditional academic outlets (e.g., journal articles) and for non-academic stakeholders (e.g., government and/or other funders).
- High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
- Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
