Position Summary
The Student Wellbeing Officer provides frontline support to students within the UNSW Medicine & Health Faculty, delivering timely and coordinated assistance to those experiencing complex health and wellbeing needs. The role is responsible for conducting psychosocial assessments, providing brief interventions, and managing case coordination, including triage, referrals and ongoing follow-up to ensure continuity of care.
Working within a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment, the Student Wellbeing Officer partners closely with central university services and external providers to deliver integrated, student-centred support aligned with university policies and procedures. The role also provides guidance to academic and professional staff on student wellbeing concerns, supports students in navigating university processes, and advocates for their needs across the faculty.
Reporting to the Wellbeing Manager, with clinical supervision from Mental Health Connect, the position contributes to a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment, while maintaining high standards of confidentiality, professional practice, and continuous service improvement.
Based at Kensington, the role may require travel to metropolitan and rural clinical schools and hospital sites.
Key Skills Required
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health Nursing, or related field, with minimum 4-5 years’ clinical experience. Registration with a professional body (e.g. AHPRA, AASW) is essential.
- Significant experience supporting students with complex needs, with demonstrated capability in psychosocial and risk assessment.
- Confidence in appropriate triage, case management, escalation, and care coordination, within established governance frameworks, ideally within a tertiary education context.
- Strong understanding of student referral pathways and experience working within higher education or similar support systems.
- Proven experience providing high quality, culturally safe support or service delivery to people from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent ability to build rapport with students and staff, provide empathetic support, and communicate sensitive information clearly and confidently.
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating self-motivation, initiative and judgment.
