This position plays an important role within the Identity and Access Management (IAM) team in the IT Cyber department. The person in this role will provide technical services within an operational team to manage a modern IAM framework - a set of business processes, policies, governance, and supporting technologies that enable appropriate and timely creation, maintenance, and use of digital identities. The IAM Engineer will provide technical services, guidance, and stewardship in accordance with the scope of work identified, agreed, and signed off by the IAM Cloud Services Manager. The role reports to IAM Cloud Services Manager and has no direct reports.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Resolve issues/requests/problems raised in UNSW’s Service Management system related to Identity-related tickets, including Entra ID (including Users, Groups, Devices, Single Sign-On, Multi Factor Authentication etc), Identity Governance and Administration (including User Provisioning, Access Requests etc), Privileged Access Management and Active Directory.
  • Investigate underlying causes for these tickets and make recommendations to adjust Identity related technical configuration, processes, governance and/or policy as appropriate.
  • Onboard applications into Single Sign-On (SSO) to authenticate against Entra ID, including analysis of claims for authentication, authorisation and related governance.
  • Onboard applications into Privileged Access Management (PAM) for facilitation or vaulting of privileged access, including the adoption of least privilege.
  • Conduct effective communications with customers, ensuring a high level of customer service is provided when resolving their issues.
  • Raise complex risks and issues, and work with the Identity, Cyber and IT application teams to ensure appropriate solutions are in place.
  • Contribute to the design and development of Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions, from conceptual, logical, and physical design to meet business and technical requirements leveraging architecture patterns and following development processes.
  • Contribute to the design, development and maintenance of integration components/applications for the Identity management platform.
  • Develop, review and update documentation, including designs, configuration, procedures, guides, and other documentation required to support IAM Solutions.
  • Programming/scripting (eg Powershell, SQL, Terraform, etc) to support automation and the efficient use of Identity Management solutions.
  • Be available for On-Call / After Hours support on a rotating basis, typically up to one week per month as well as weekend and After-Hours work as required.
  • Continue to keep well-informed and up to date in learning new identity technologies, programming languages, frameworks, and paradigms.

Who you are:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience in IT engineering or development, specifically for Identity Management or directory services.
  • Experience with or proficiency in a scripting or development (eg Powershell, SQL, Terraform, or C#, Java), to support task automation.
  • Experience troubleshooting IAM Solutions in a production environment.
  • Knowledge of Entra ID, Active Directory, Privileged Access Management, and Federation Services is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Single Sign-On (SSO) protocols, including OpenID Connect (OIDC), OAuth2.0 and SAML is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of Identity Governance and Administration (IGA), including the concepts of Roles Based Access Control (RBAC), Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC), or Policy Based Access Control (PBAC).
  • Understanding of key IT/Cybersecurity concepts (Network Security, Security Operations & Administration, Incident Response & Recovery, Identity and Access Management, Vulnerability Management etc).
  • Strong creative and innovative problem-solving skills, with a willingness to take responsibility for the software design/develop all the way to Production.
  • Comprehensive analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
