The Head of Technology Transformation plays a key strategic and leadership role in the implementation of the UNSW Leap Technology Strategy. The Head of Technology Transformation holds enterprise-level accountability for the Leap Program Team to deliver the implementation of the technology strategy as a program of work in a coherent and adaptive way across all the parts of the University that are stewards of the University’s technology and beyond. This role ensures that strategic ambition turns into visible, collective progress and leads the team to connect delivery with direction, while pacing the rhythm to keep Leap in motion. As a senior advisor to the CIO and a key driver of institutional technology transformation, the role leads the coordination of systems, frameworks, and programs that shape the long-term strategic direction of digital change at UNSW. The Head of Technology Transformation leads a small team to develop and drive forward program change management strategy and plans, including communications and capability, that enable business areas and impacted teams to adopt and embed changes. The Head of Technology Transformation reports to the CIO and will have direct reports.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Strategic alignment – ensure Leap actively supports the university’s Progress for All strategy by turning its priorities into measurable technology outcomes
- Own and lead the implementation for Leap Technology Strategy program, including setting priorities, shaping institutional transformation frameworks and delivery mechanisms that turn strategy into action.
- Design and maintain Leap’s operating rhythm and strategic allocation of program resources, ensuring activities happen reliably and are experienced as valuable by participants.
- System coherence - keep the orchestration system aligned by connecting Action Area rhythms, oversight groups, and planning cycles into one visible system. Prevent duplication, fragmentation, and drift.
- Facilitate definition, alignment, and review of OKRs across Action Areas and technology centres. Maintain visibility of all initiatives mapped to Leap’s Action Areas, track progress against shared OKRs, and ensure insights from delivery inform strategic decision-making.
- Deliver clear, high-quality dashboards and quarterly summary reports to the ULT that show leaders and teams how their work links to Progress for All outcomes and Leap priorities
- Translate insights from delivery and reflection into tangible improvements to the Leap playbook, planning cadence, and engagement experience. Feed learnings into annual planning and capability development.
- Lead enterprise-wide consultation and governance forums, serving as the authoritative advisor on enterprise transformation methodology, cross-portfolio integration, and organisational readiness, with influence extending beyond the UNSW IT domain.
- Identify and mitigate organisational readiness risks, supporting leaders to navigate systemic change and lead through clarity and evidence Direct the development of detailed change impact assessments, plan and facilitate workshops, develop change management plans and communications, and develop and deliver supporting collateral, as required.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
Who you are:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications with at least 6+ years’ experience leading and implementing large scale change initiatives in complex environments and/or extensive relevant experience gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
- Demonstrated experience using human-centred change principles in driving engagement and adoption.
- Demonstrated experience working with all levels of stakeholders including senior stakeholders in designing and delivering change activities to support business leaders and their teams through change and integrate change management activities for the program plans.
- Demonstrated understanding and extensive experience in leading and providing change advice and support across multiple projects or program streams within agreed timeframes and supporting business users to adopt and embed change.
- Experience in Program Delivery within the higher education sector is desirable.
- Advanced written and verbal communications skills.
- Advance expertise in the development of documentation, PowerPoint packs, facilitating workshops, using collaboration tools and email communication.
- Confidence using AI/Large language models
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to successfully meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks with changing priorities.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to build and maintain effective internal and external working relationships, influence leaders and liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
