The Test lead position is responsible for the strategic planning, monitoring, and control of the testing activities and tasks and is member of the UNSW IT Testing Services Team. At the outset of a project, in collaboration with the other stakeholders, the Test Lead will devise the test objectives, apply organizational test policies and create test strategies and test plans. The Test Lead position will report into the Head of Testing Services and will have no direct reports.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Lead the software testing and testers, including reviewing requirements, specifications, defining test conditions
- Define the scope and depth of testing that needs to be performed and make recommendations on the required resources.
- Own the development of test objectives, organizational test policies, and comprehensive test strategies and plans, while actively collaborating and communicating these strategies and plans with key stakeholders
- Recommend and negotiate levels of test coverage and ensures traceability of test cases to functional requirements.
- Lead end to end operation of software testing from data diagnosis through to formulating resolutions
- Prepare, design and execute test cases and test scripts under own direction, mapping back to pre determined criteria, as well as recording and reporting outcomes.
- Identity and set test approaches that optimise delivery schedule adherence and ensure testing activities are performed in accordance with established policies, processes and procedures
- Provide regular reporting on test activities and results, escalating test issues identified and ensuring they are resolved.
- Identify and implement continuous improvements to testing and QA process, methods, tools and standards.
- Test the usability of component systems, and alternative designs, administering formative and summative usability tests, logging and analysing data.
- Review and assess the impact of change requests.
- Oversee the development of installation procedures and standards.
- Identify and report on issues and risks associated with own work and the work of other testers

- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
- Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
Who you are:
- Relevant tertiary qualification with extensive relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience together with 10+ years’ experience in software testing.
- Demonstrated capability in Test Process Improvement and Test Process Governance.
- Demonstrated capability in software testing including preparation of test plans, test cases, execution of tests and reporting of defects.
- Demonstrated capability in defect management processes and the ability to lead defect management workshops.
- Strong presentation skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to structure and articulate messages to different audiences at all levels.
- Ability to advocate the value of software testing processes and methods to stakeholders including Project Managers, Business Analysts and Developers.
- Good knowledge of automated testing tools and methods.
- Ability to analyse data, recognise problems and formulate solutions
- Experience applying best practice in the planning and organising of own activities as well as the work of others.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
