This role sits within our Legal & Compliance team who provide trusted advice on all legal matters affecting the University and upholds the University’s Legislative Compliance Framework.

Why Your Role Matters: 
The UNSW Intellectual Property (IP) & Commercialisation team supports the University in all areas of intellectual property, research and commercialisation legal matters.

In this role, you will provide sound, practical legal support in a professional, timely and effective manner. Support the University in navigating commercial and IP-related matters ranging from the review of research funding, IP agreements and clinical agreements to establishing unincorporated research centres, hubs & affiliations.

You will play an integral role in the review, development and implementation of innovative and creative Legal strategies and programs to build capability working closely with a client group or on an organisational level.

Who You Are:

  • You'll hold a tertiary qualification in law with a minimum of 5 years’ post qualification experience in a highly regarded law firm and/or in house legal team with significant experience in at least two of the following disciplines:
    • Research and IP commercialisation,
    • Commercial/corporate
      (including thorough understanding of the application of Corporations Law to privately held companies in the context of commercial transactions),
    • Copyright or Trade Marks,
    • Patents.
  •  Admission to the Supreme Court of NSW and a current practising certificate (or admission in another Australian jurisdiction and eligible to be admitted and practice in NSW).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex legal issues with minimal direction.
  • Advanced drafting skills proven capacity to think laterally, exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in respect of legal practice.
  • Strong consultation and negotiation skills and proven ability to build effective relationships and influence senior management and key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Superior organisational and time management skills, including accuracy and a high level of attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Proven ability to lead and work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Strong business acumen and a demonstrated capability to lead, manage and deliver high level Legal support required in the achievement of business objectives.
  • Superior interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to write for internal and external audiences with clarity, accuracy and precision, (including anticipation of legal risks and proactive solutions to eliminate or mitigate them).
