Why your role matters

The Senior Educational and Assessment Designer is based in the Curriculum and Educational Design Team within the UNSW Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education (PVCE)’s Educational Excellence Team. The PVCE provides university-wide leadership, services and resources that support excellence in education and the student learning experience. Working collaboratively with faculties, academic staff and professional teams, this role supports UNSW’s commitment to educational excellence and a world-class student experience, with a specialist focus on assessment and feedback.

The role provides expert leadership and guidance in assessment and feedback design, contributing to policy development and future directions in higher education, including AI in learning and assessment, assurance of learning, and future-focused pedagogies. Partnering with faculty-based academics and education support teams, the Senior Educational and Assessment Designer leads initiatives that enhance curriculum and assessment practices to ensure they are inclusive, authentic, future-focused and aligned with course and program learning outcomes.

Working closely with faculties and teams across the PVCE portfolio, the role contributes to university-wide, evidence-based educational design initiatives that enhance student learning, engagement and academic integrity. Reporting to the Lead, Curriculum and Educational Design, and working as part of a team of Educational Designers with no direct reports, the role provides leadership, mentoring and expert advice to ensure contemporary best practice in assessment and feedback is consistently applied across UNSW.

About You:  

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in education, instructional design, learning sciences or a related field, or professional equivalent, and substantial experience in educational design within a higher education context.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in education/academic development and experience in assessing students are highly regarded.
  • Mandatory: Demonstrated leadership and expertise in designing, managing, implementing and evaluating assessment strategies in a university setting Strong knowledge of contemporary assessment principles (e.g. authentic assessment, constructive alignment) and experience with a range of assessment types (formative, summative, peer assessment, etc.)
  • Mandatory: Hands-on experience with learning management systems,  digital assessment tools and Ai – particularly Moodle, online quiz platforms, e-exam systems like Inspera, and plagiarism/originality checking and feedback tools such as TurnitinAbility to advise on the pedagogical use of these technologies and Ai to enhance student learning and maintain academic integrity and security.
  • Mandatory: Deep understanding of feedback processes and feedback literacy. Ability to guide academic staff in providing effective feedback and to develop initiatives that improve students’ capacity to use feedback. Experience in evaluating the effectiveness of teaching interventions or curricula (e.g. through surveys, learning analytics, or other measures).
  • Substantial experience in curriculum design at a program level, including mapping course outcomes to program learning outcomes and designing assessment frameworks across a whole program. Proven track record of working effectively with academic leaders on curriculum reform or enhancement projects.
  • Excellent communication, consultation and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with academic and professional staff at all levels across divisions and faculties. Confidence in presenting to groups and writing clear guidelines or reports.
  • Substantial experience in developing, delivering and facilitating professional development or training workshops and programs to groups of educators in face to face, hybrid and online contexts. Skill in coaching or mentoring academics to build their teaching capability, ideally in areas related to assessment and digital pedagogy.
  • Strong analytical skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving in an educational context. Able to identify issues in curriculum design  practices and recommend evidence-based solutions or improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience supervising staff or leading project teams, with effective leadership, delegation and mentoring skills. Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive team culture.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of higher education trends, sector benchmarking, and regulatory requirements related to assessment and future focussed pedagogies (e.g. standards for academic integrity, accreditation requirements, use of AI in assessment,
  • A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in curriculum and learning design.
